    Anyone have experience with...

    Electric shavers?

Not crunching related, but I am going to have a huge lifestyle change in the upcoming weeks to months. I have been in the hospital for acute renal failure which has been determined to be caused by a disease called Wegener's Granulomatosis. It is a fairly rare disease since it effects about 1 out of 100,000 people who are mostly 90% white. I am going to be on cytoxan (chemotherapy to put the disease into chemical remission) and predisone (stop inflammation) for the upcoming months. Definetely not something I was expecting to have at the age of 26, but I have to deal with it.

Since my immune system is going to be down the tubes due to the medicine, nicks and cuts is not something I can afford using a traditional razor. Does anyone have any recommendations?

I used to have a Remington that I liked, but that was when my facial hair was more like "hair" and less like "steel wire". Other folks seem to swear by various Phillishave devices. I have one but have actually given myself more razor burn and nicks than I get from my straight so it's a tough call.

Damn, sorry to hear that. I wish you the best.

    Here's what I use: http://www.philips-store.com/store?A...ctID=222358000

It works well and is easy to clean. I've been through a bunch of electrics, this is the best I've found in its price range. I'm too lazy to use cream/foam and a blade.

I actually can't remember the last time I shaved with a razor. I always use clippers with no guard. It leaves a fairly close stubble look and since I'm in school I don't have to be super duper clean shaven everyday. I recommend it if you don't have to be either. I use Wahl Peanut clippers.

Sorry about what you have to deal with. I hate when stuff gets thrown at us that we have no control over and are forced to deal with it. I have a REAL hard time with that stuff.

Anyway, I work in a profession that doesn't mind me being not so clean shaven....and the fiance doesn't mind too too much either. So, I do pretty much what shoota does, stubble from an open clipper/trimmer.

Hmm, well I have a goatee already but my actual facial hair comes in fairly weird. My fiancé doesn't really care for having hair on my face since it rubs against her, but I can see what she thinks. I suppose the biggest issue I have is the steel hair like D_A described. I do not have normal facial hair. I suppose trial and error will suffice. I wonder if electric shavers can be returned if it does not work well...hmm. The phillips shaver Plan.B recommended looks like a nice shaver, but $200 is a fair chunk of money. I might go with the normal clippers route, but we will see.

Thanks for your support and input.

Yeah, I used to go the clipper route as well and just keep constant stubble on my face. My woman quite liked it!

Never could shave everyday...electric would give me razor burn and blade not much better. Now I'm a Sunday shaver only (except for those special occasions!).

Wishing you all the best kjeldoran.

Thanks for the input, I'll probably go the grizzly route (bar my hair not falling out...) and maybe get an electric shaver in the next couple months.

I was released from the hospital last night. Went to the sperm bank today (yeah, it could cause infertility...) and had a fairly awkward moment. My fiance was with me and this 70 year old lady said, "Is she here to help collect the specimen?" I'm like...uh, you answer dear. When I was done, another older lady said, "Well, how was it?" Probably the weirdest thing I have ever been through. I should have cracked a few jokes, but it was 6AM...

Treatment starts tomorrow and I found out I have one more treatment to do. Plasmapheresis for the next couple of weeks nearly everyday. Tomorrow is going to be a long day. Get there at 5:30AM and I won't be done with the surgery (chest catheter), plasmapheresis and cytoxan until 6PM.

Aside from that, the hardest thing right now is a diet. Low sodium, low potassium and I have to keep my calories in check so the steroids don't keep the weight on me. Been hungry all day and I have eaten about 1800 calories of different types of food. Renal diet sucks.

Damn bro I feel for you. I've had to watch my premature nephew go from healthy and normal to crippled with cerebral palsy. I know how hard diseases can be. Do what you can to keep your spirits up, see the good in every little thing, and embrace a new lifestyle. It'll all be worth it in the end.

I just gave up shaving when they told me the same for my immune system. Not like I have the energy to with the metoprolol anyway. But I'm rocking quite a beard, as I have no issues whatsoever getting mine to grow. Hit me up on PM if you ever wanna talk about how it is, I'm living with Marfan's and we're now throwing dangerous levels of meds at it to keep me from serious open heart surgery.

Yeah, I think there is a lot of serious stuff that goes unknown until someone says something. Good luck with your treatment Kayin.

Yeah, I am going to go with the facial hair. The fiancé says she likes the manly look it gives me so it looks like that will not be an issue .

Sadly, I was readmitted to the hospital on Friday because my creatinine levels shot up to 6 and I feel like crap. Depending on how the pheresis treatments and the cytoxan work, they are probably going to dialysis tomorrow. Honestly, I hope they do dialysis because I cannot put anymore water weight on. I have put on 31lbs (water weight) in 10 days. I hope I do not have to be on dialysis for the rest of my life, but I'll deal with that later. Transplantation isn't even an option for me because of my disease.

On a side note, I should play the lottery. I get a rare disease that usually strikes older people and everything goes to hell in 1.5 weeks. Here I come power ball! If I did win, I would donate a lot of money to the hospital I am currently in because they have treated me so well. I'd also give all XS crunchers a free 2600k cruncher! I honestly feel like I could just drop my job/career and donate all my time to help this hospital.

Good news, my cruncher is still up and running with its stable overclock. The only adverse side effect of the chemo I have had is lack of appetite (yet). AND my pee can strip paint off of walls! (Just kidding, they said my pee is pretty much a toxic substance now, but I wish it could take paint off.)

I have been on blood thinners since my heart attack and use a panasonic wet/dry electric razor. Use it with shaving cream and water and it does not leave razor burn or obviously cuts. Best of luck.

    Woohoo!!!!!!!!!

Finally I am being discharged. The insurance paperwork was a bunch of BS and I am glad to get out of the hospital.

Only downside, I am on 9 medications and on hemodialysis. At least I am free from the confines of the hospital!
