Patent troll claims ownership of interactive Web -- and might win

Michael Doyle, a low-profile Chicago biologist, claims that it was actually he and two co-inventors who invented—and patented—the "interactive web" before anyone else, while they were employed by the University of California back in 1993. Doyle argues that a program he created at the UC’s San Francisco campus, which allowed doctors to view embryos over the nascent World Wide Web, was the first program that allowed users to interact with images inside of a Web browser window. The defendants hotly contest that, saying that it was programs like Pei-Yuan Wei's pioneering Viola that first offered this functionality.

Today, Doyle and his lawyers say he’s owed royalty payments for the use of a stunning array of modern Web technologies. Watching online video, having a "search suggestion" pop up in a search bar, or even rotating an image of a sweater you might want to buy on an online shopping site—all are said to infringe on the idea-space of Doyle and his company, Eolas Technologies.

Not exactly. You can only sue for damages in patent infringement litigation during the 6 year period prior to the suit being filed.

Patents filed prior to June 1995 expire after a period of 17 years. Patents since that date have a lifespan of 20 years.

While I agree those bills are complete Satan, I'm not really sure if you understand the "free and open internet" concept very well. You are attempting to blur the lines between the internet being a place of free speech and ideas, and the justification of theft of others property.

Just make sure to tell me next time you go on vacation so I can stop by and demonstrate in practice that line of thought.

And to be clear, I'm completely against SOPA and PIPA because It's simply another big government take-over of the private sector. The democrats are pushing this lie that the bill is aimed at software theft, which couldn't be further from the truth. It's an old political trick to disguise your agenda as a worthwhile cause so you can point at your opponents that oppose your bill and claim they want to protect pirates..

Actually I thought SOPA was interesting precisely because it did not break down along party lines. At first it seemed to be supported by a good mix from both parties.
