    SOPA Resistance Day begins!

Today is SOPA Resistance Day at Ars. Sites across the 'Net, from reddit to the Internet Archive, from Wikipedia to Google, are protesting the excesses of the Stop Online Piracy Act. SOPA remains a flawed bill that treats piracy as an existential threat to the US economy and to a sacred class of rightsholders—and in doing so loses all perspective on appropriate remedies. The discussion is absolutely unbalanced.

Many sites have chosen to go dark (i.e., offline) today, a stance we respect—but it's not the right path for us. Ars Technica has, for 14 years, tried to be an information resource, and the most appropriate response from Ars is to provide even more information on the legislation, how you can fight it, and what's really at stake.

Maybe essential is an exaggeration but it is a great help! If you need to understand the basis of something or get information fast (such as the mass of specific molecules), wikipedia works better for me than journal articles or mass spectrometry/nmr databases.

This is a domestic issue in USA, and should be handled by US citizents.

What an absurd assumption you make. Your comment does not address my question.

This wasn't about piracy from the get go. Just look at the sites, the supporters of SOPA are after. eBay, Newegg, monoprice etc.

Are there ways to circumvent the read blackout?

The community has asked us to preserve emergency access options. The following methods will remain available to access content:

    Disabling JavaScript in your browser
Using bookmarklets or other tools to unhide the content
Visiting the mobile site at http://en.m.wikipedia.org/
Accessing site content via the API
Appending ?banner=none to the end of page URLs.

As noted above, the mobile site will be available, but will display a banner pointing people to ways to protest SOPA/PIPA.

    also this works
Those of you who need to use Wikipedia today...

    1) Go to Wikipedia top page. 2) Enter search parameters. 3) Get link. (page goes black) 4) Copy/paste link into Google search. 5) Click on "cached" button. 6) Read wikipedia contents.

I may be from the UK, but most of the traffic on my site comes from the US, so I took it down for the Sopa protest as well.

Besides, we all know European politicians like to copy things from America, it may take a few years, but you can be sure if Sopa gets approved Europe will follow with something similar.

The secret behind SOPA, the so-called anti-piracy bill which is today the target of an unprecedented backlash with Wikileaks and other major websites ‘going dark’ to protest the legislation, has nothing to do with piracy or copyright theft – it’s about the formal effort to mimic Communist China’s system of Internet censorship.
This is the true secret behind SOPA

20 years ago that's how it was portrayed in history books and movies. Back then, most of those from outside U.S. used to believe that - until the internet became widely available and the true history and present of U.S. was revealed... 20 years later, as in - Now... U.S. is portrayed as the cancer of this world... and those that follow their way of doing business are considered responsible for spreading that cancer... and by cancer - i don't mean the majority of U.S. citizens, since they seem to have very little to do with the way they're country is managed, but the government and the corporations that rules over U.S. and other parts of this world. Some could say that North Korea is worst - and i agree with that, but at least it's not spreading... even newer movies tend to express the same thing - cause apparently, the lies aren't so popular as they were before.

Maybe I'm the only one who got it, but I think it was a joke.

"Fight for your right to [this statement censored by SOPA]."

true if everyone thinks this will affect only the US is blind. it may take a little bit of time if this does happen but the other countries will follow suit and create their own version of SOPA.

Then just download a clone of wikipedia to keep on your computer. [it only takes 20GB if you use ZIM files]
