What makes some of them do damn expensive?

A cheap sunpack

What sort of qualitative differences exist between polarizers?

Well, polarizes usually rob you of some light, so difference is in how much light goes through (in theory). Then if it adds flare or not. If it radicaly changes colors or not.
Heliopan is a lot about brandname too. Similar to Zeiss.
I would stay away from cheapests, pretty much anything from mid-range is usually fine as far as filters goes. Decent bet is Kenko (which is Hoya with different brandname and ergo cheaper). B+Ws are widely used. Tiffens too. Not much differece in mid-range and those most expensive will be probably just "good name".
Tho Ive heard (never saw one actually) that Leica filters are really worth it.. Not sure how much is that true. Zeiss filters are pretty much same as others, except fact that their polarizers tend to shift colors a lot (towards "Zeiss" colors .. some ppl dont like that and they cut bit too much light from what I saw). But *T coatings are pretty durable, so maybe they are worth it in long term..

I wish I could answer your question.
I have a friend that is a regional sales manager for the latgest camera store in Canada. He suggested Hoya products when it comes to filters. He said bang for buck they are probably the best value and performers. I just picked up 2 67 MM Hoya HD CIR - PL filters about 2 hours ago.

So one should be looking to spend around $40 for a decent polarizer then?

Hawaii, but amazon still gives us super saver shipping
Interesting price difference between EU and US.
Kenko is sold here at 1/3 of Hoya price. In US they have similar prices or its even reversed and Kenko is more expensive than Hoya. Wonder whats behind that..
