Why do I need Steam for MW3?

    This sucks.
I got MW3 for Christmas and I can't play it!
Whats the point in buying a retail DVD-ROM when it forces me to download the game from Steam?
I've been trying to install it for 4 hours, and I keep getting 'Steam servers are busy'...
It's actually managed to connect now, but says 9 hours remaining!
Why can't it just install from the DVD?

u can install from the dvd but it will have to update.

and u need steam since it uses it for matchmaking, vac (anticheat), and as an update service. sure the update service is nothign more than a dlc store but the matchmaking and friends list stuff is allot better than gamespy and since they removed servers u cannot have a server browser (u cannot play ranked and use a server so its all fail)

And do you realize that just because a game can be played on the PC does not mean it's a PC game.

+1, since u cannot play ranked and on a server at the same time, i dont get why any1 wants it.

I got it sorted, but the fact is it 'attempted' to download the entire game from Steam. All 14Gb of it.
It didn't even attempt to use the DVD's.
Solutuion was to pause the download in Steam, browse to the DVD and manually run setup.exe
I guess it's a bug in the way the autorun is setup.
