    EA Origin Bans: Update Edition

The pattern tends to go like this:

Person says a naughty word on an EA forum.
Person receives 72 hour ban from forums, which blocks Origin too.
Person contacts EA customer support and is told “tough”.
    Person writes to RPS.

    With the occasional addition of:

Person finds their ban has become permanent with no warning, and no option to appeal.

“Please be informed that your account not only suspended, But it is also Banned, So you will no longer to play the game in single player.”
    Full article.
    http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2011...pdate-edition/

BONUS! The ban also will wipe out your access to Bad Company 2, even if you bought it through Steam like I did!

Haven't noticed this, except the huge number of bans in MP by punkbuster. Silly aimbotters.

I think german law could kick their nuts - you payed the game, you MUST be able to play SP at least...not sure about permanent ban in MP but banning somebody in SP is ILLEGAL FS!!!!

They can ban you but also have to pay back your costs...

I wish I had enough money for testing that - if that is true it must be possible to kick their origin into dust...again: it is surely illegal to ban somebody from his game in singleplayer due to cheating / flaming / whatever without paying back the price the person invested...

It's like "we'll take back your car because you are responsible for a crash"....

I won't buy BF3 and any origin-game as long as this problem persists...

freedom of speech/press is in regard to our federal, state or local government. It has nothing to do with private entities like EA or Apple. When you work for Apple, you play by Apple’s rules. Sure you can say whatever you like, doesn’t mean Apple can’t or won’t punish you for it. I would think the same applies for/toward EA. On their forums, they make the rules. I feel banning people from Origin is a little drastic and I defiantly don’t agree with it... it’s their forum board, they make the rules. Just like life. It’s not fair.

No legal action from anyone until now? Sounds somehow strange to me - looks like they are treating gamers like they have no rights?!

before it was on single player games and its much easier to just pirate something that use it with their DRM anyways so people just moved on. and once that came to light and got an internet following they restored the accounts for mass effect 2 (im not sure on sims)

True dat. The issue however is that in the process they are taking people the possibility to play the games they bought.

Maybe it works elsewhere but in Germany you not only buy a right to use the software as long as you stick to developers rules. In Germany you're allowed to do anything you like with your software as long as you do not break any laws. Afaik there is no law against cheating or flaming...
Notice any grammar or spelling mistakes? Feel free to correct me! Thanks

It's completely normal to have it in the work contract that the employee is not allowed to do or say anything that could potentially have a negative impact on the company or its reputation.

this is the same artificial connection of software and services that microsoft was doing with IE and windows when the antitrust lawsuits happened. microsoft was saying IE and windows were the same thing, they were so connected it was impossible to separate them.

do you believe games on your private computer are so connected to EA's private servers that you can't use your games after EA denies you access to their servers?

Those stupid idiots are trying to take on Steam with policies like this? Well I highly doubt this is exactly what the complacent execs intended, but poor communication leave the bitter tyrants to do as they please.

I've worked in customer service enough to know all to well the fallacy of 'the customer is always right.', bans are fine and perma bans that would even strip people of their ability to play at all, are warranted for those with a history. But whoever ordered that customers should be stripped entirely at the slightest provocation needs to be fired asap, the overzealous are just another form of corruption that should never be tolerated in the ranks of anyone who deals with customers.

    hypocrisy at its finest!

BF3 has foul language in game play such as: I'm getting my pushed in, etc..

The hell with EA, they ain't getting my money, I never really liked their games anyway. Its pretty stupid to ban somebody from playing games they rightfully played for just because they used foul language in the game or forum, well the games they release has foul language as well, hypocrites.
