Christmas build: SR-2 or wait for SR-3?

Just got the green light to build a new 24/7 cruncher for Christmas

    A: Build a SR-2 right now
    B: Wait for SR-3

If I should wait for SR-3, then I will build something like a 2600K or 3960X for Christmas.

any ideas will help, this is only for my crunching farm I'm working on. Need the most points per $.

    Thanks,

    Cruncher 1 | 2600K @ 4.5ghz | 2x GTX 690 |
    Cruncher 2 | Skulltrail @ 4.0ghz | XFX 7970 |

At this time then most points per $ must be an SB rig...it should also be upgradeable to IB as long as there is a bios at that time.

Those DP rigs only advantage is maybe overclocking but at the cost of power consumption

I'm with OC. Build a couple SB rigs now (maybe run both off the same strong psu) and then upgrade to IB down the road should you feel the need.

Two 2600k s on one PSU over an SR3 - better performance/$ and great performance/Watt

If you have an immediate need for 16+ threads and/or 24GB+ of RAM, then I would recommend you get an SR-2 rig. On the other hand, if you only use the computer for gaming and desktop applications then I'd go with 2600K or 3960X. I have an SR-2 rig and I love it. Sure it is e-peen noteworthy, but I bought it because I sometimes run several virtual machines concurrently using VMWare.

SR-3 will be VERY expensive, do you know that? Like $1400 for the cheapest 8-core cpu , 10 core cpu's $2000+ each.
Not very cost effective at all imo.

In this case you won't be building either!

... but in all honesty that's not really your objective is it? So wait to build up one bad ass SR3 rig. Refine your parts list now. Wait up late to buy them on release day... And then lead the way on team XS with the newest technology! To me that would be an awesome project to take on!

oh yea, I know all about the cost when building a beast. I built my Skulltrail at launch and it does then same as a 2600k

Yea, but you'll get the added cost back in lower electric bills.

If you want a fun build and can get by with a 2600K or two: http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...-Crunch-for-XS

Not in the lifetime of the device... 2k for a chip, that build will cost you 5k+ and while it will be a BEAST, you could get 4 2600Ks and have enough left to run them for years and still come out ahead...

If you choose the SR-2 route i've got a board you can have dirt cheap.

I think its still a ways away for SR-3. SR-2 is still one hell of a machine, but if you want the most perf per$ then you definitely want SB. no matter which way you choose to go; I am sure you will be happy and will make some killer production.

I am like Dave; I set a limit on machines and I like the dual cpu systems, but I do have 1 2600k as well.

Going to Microcenter this weekend to pick up:

    2X 2600K's
    2X GA-Z68X-UD3H-B3 LGA 1155 Z68 ATX Intel Motherboard's

Think I can run both off a 750w PSU?

This will give me a little boost while I plan a SR-2 build

    Thanks for all the input.

I would not run both off of a single PSU
    I'm not saying it won't work, I'm saying I wouldn't do it.
Best of luck on your builds.

    Oh Jaco;
Yup, SR-3 or better said: SR-X will be HUGELY expensive and no known 10 cores that will fit that I know of.
The available 10 cores are all socket 1567 that I'm aware of.
The top 8 core chips are the E5-2687W's (3100/3400 on turbo,150W) and are supposed to list at $1885.00 each here in the USA.
Now stop and just do a mental exercise of those chips in that board running a mild BCLK of 125 with a 34 multi..
You do the math my friend..
Yea, scary isn't it and where the heck can we find someone crazy enough to do one of these?
