Exclamation the 24GB limit on s1366.. mobo or CPU?

    just wondering...

when s1366/nehalem first came out 8GB DIMMs were a loooong way of.

iirc, even saaya mentioned somewhere that the stated specs of s1366 mobos in reference to the 24GB limit were there because of the fact that DDR3 dimms were a max 4GB at the time.

    things have changed.
    8GB dimms are out.

gets even more confusing.. the Intel spec page for say a i7-920, says the max. mem. addressable is 24GB - just like the mobos that it would go into. But the -almost- exact same Xeon CPU (5640: 2.66Ghz, 5.86GT/s 12MB cache, 32nm) can address 288GB.

I want to know if I can drop more than 24GB into my desktop s1366 mobo & everything be ok. Sure, I might need a Xeon CPU (which I actually already have), but I won't be too happy if mobo manufacturers wont update their BIOSs to allow for the ability to increase mem capacity.

so what is limiting s1366 -desktop stuff- to 24GB?
    the mobo/BIOS?
or the consumer/ desktop CPUs? (seeing as Xeon CPUs arent)
    or both?

    Seems to be bios related.
Asus states for the REX3Be 48Gb:

    REX3 still 24Gb.

Remember that Xeons Processors are usually paired with Buffered Memory Modules that can have much higher density, and Desktop users uses Unbuffered. That should be the main reason bewthem the 24 GB Desktop and 288 GB Server limits.

I posted this same thread over @ OCAU - a fellow there mentioned that he had an Asus P6T that initially only supported 12GB, however there has been a BIOS update so it is now listed as supporting 24GB

I'd bet the Rampage II Extreme will work with 48GB...more likely that Asus hasn't updated the specs for it. I wonder if a person uses a Xeon in such a board if you could cram 6x16GB or 6x32GB ECC DIMMs into it?...

An interesting question directly applicable to the forthcoming (and waaaaaay overdue) Xeon E5. 8x32GB DDR3 LV DIMM in a single processor system=Yummy...
