i just realized something sad about FPS games

the last competative play based FPS that came out was COD4 in 07, so its been 4 years since a game came out with mods, servers, working engine and usable maps/gear. we only had 1 close since then from BC2 but that was just good multiplayer and not for competative play.

So what? I don't need new Counter Strike, new Unreal Tournament, new Quake. UT3, CS:S and Q3 are good enough. Anything new would just split the community without bringing enough new good things. If you love mods, dedicated servers and custom content why don't you keep playing COD4?

I agree, sure the older games that G.Foyle posted are great but I personally would love a REAL FPS (UT/Quake) that was built to make use of a high end PC of today but with all the great things that those older games had going for them. All these new FPS games are really not geared towards community and thats why they die so fast.

i guess we dont need new games, but new games are nice since as of now the only active game is CSS and its got a terrible engine since the OSX nerf came out so an update would be nice.

COD5 had bad maps/gear, and it had a worse netstack than 4 since it ran from the console engine at 30tick but COd4 had the pc engine that ran native at 80 tick.

You are right, so many years (from a gaming perspective) and we have nothing new. It's a pity.
But in the end this happens because we support companies who create crappy games. Activision would not had released a second MW2 (called MW3) if we had rejected it and not bought it.
    It's somehow our fault too.

I think most FPS games have turned to crap these days. They're so dumbed down it sucks HARD!

As for competition play, the current greats are still here like CS, CSS, UT and Quake.

They don't need to be replaced, at most they just need some shinier graphics to lure some new people to it.

I always wondered why I havnt ever been able to enjoy FPS games since Heretic / Hexen.

I bought the ID pack on steam with Quake, Heretic and Hexen games, and I enjoy all of them immensely. If I try any recent FPS, or most FPS games from the last several years, I' simply bored right from the start.

were is this we, its the console kids who are to blame for the most part. people who play shooters on consoles suck at fps just by the nature of playing with a controller so it has to be dumbed down. then they want to appeal to larger audiances so even more stupid, and then the publishers forget that u loose $5-10 for a digital distribution pc game to the store but for a console game u loose 15-20 to the console maker then $20 to the store and u are stuck with 1/3-1/2 the profits of a pc sale (we do expect alot more from games like having them work though)
