Should a socket 1155 motheboard power on without a CPU?

    Hi as per topic title,

I have an Asus P8P67 LE Socket 1155 Motherboard and am waiting for the CPU to arrive.

Have the system built up complete and decided to power it up.

The led that indicated the motherboard is getting power is lit.

And the red overclocking switch when moved to the 'on' position makes the led associated to it come on.

When I press the power button nothing happens at all.

PSU does not power up, no fans on the motherboard power up.

Have attached a fan onto the cpu fan header, but still no power.

Have not seen this characteristic before, but this is my first socket 1155 motherboard.

So hoping someone could shed some light on this....

    Thanks

You will get power to the board but it will not power on without a CPU. Anxious are we?

    LOL, thanks for your reply.

Are you confirming to me that the board will NOT power on without a CPU?

I hope so, then I can stop being anxious!

Hope to hear back from you, or someone else confirming this.

    Cheers

On the Smack Over 2 I tested a while back, having either a dead chip or no chip present meant the power button did absolutely nothing. I reckon you should be fine

You guys are much braver than I. I would have never powered on a mobo without its CPU. I would've tested the rest of the system, psu, water pumps, fans etc, but I would have done so with my ATX psu jumper connected to the PSU and not the actual motherboard connected to the psu. Non the less this is good to know that it wont hurt anything If I should ever do this myself.

We need a follow up if your CPU showed up and what the result was?

Why would you power up a motherboard with NO CPU in it?

That's just asking for trouble, I believe.

I mean, it's not like it is 100% damaging, but imagine that for some reason there is a tiny speck of dust on the socket pins, and when you power it up, BAM. Static electricity fries the socket. Hopefully, at least you were smart not to remove the plastic socket cover. Right?

(I know nothing about electricity, but it's pretty much anywhere in static form).
