Why does the R4E have different mounting than every other board?
looks nice, but what happened to Ramapge heatsinks? the Maximus 4 Extreme and Rampage 3 Extreme had some nice heatsinks. That is a lot of heatsink tho.

1. GOOD: Asus is apparently the only board maker smart enough to realize that ALL THEIR X79 BOARDS SHOULD HAVE 8 DIMM SLOTS. This is an expensive platform that needs all the differentiation it can get, and shipping an X79 board without its most unique feature is brain dead retarded.
2. GOOD: Asus continues to use Intel NIC, at least some of the time, even though they only install 1 of them. ASRock and others can apparently afford 2 NIC because they don't spend the extra 100% each on Intel. (Only 1 NIC on a $400 motherboard = BAD, but I won't be an arseface and give that a number)
3. BAD: What is with all these crazy heatsink+fan designs?!?! Have they gone mad?!?! FANS BREAK. THESE FANS ARE NOT EASILY USER-REPLACEABLE.
4. BAD: Expansion slot configurations. They look nearly random. And these boards have the capability to support QUAD-SLI/CROSSFIRE, so why don't they!!! That is part of the niche these boards are for!
5. BAD: Expansion slots blocked by DIMM slot position/height. Some of the X79 boards have DIMM slots that completely block the top expansion slot. Do we really need to pay $$$ for ATX motherboards that are missing ATX slots? The Rampage has the DIMM slots higher up so at least the top slot exists... even though they penalize you for this by emptying some other expansion slots below. *face palm*

Wow, you just want everything on every board don't you? The difference in features is a result of market segregation. Not everyone requires features of a top of the range x79 board.
To me a 4 way layout is a nuisance as it prevents me to optimize my desired expansion setup. Say I want to run two dual slot GPUs, a sound card and a PCIe SSD without performance penalties that come from splitting a x16 link into two x8. 4 way capable RIVE, UD7 or UD3 prevent me to do that due to their slot layout and lane distribution. On the other hand the retarded (in your words) Gigabyte UD5, MSI GD45 or ASUS Sabertooth are right up my alley since they don't split x16 links and have a proper slot spacing.
As you can clearly see boards with feature sets you desire are also readily available. Win for me, win for you.
To me implementing features, that maybe 0.01% of platform users are going to use, on every damn board is the retarded course of action.
It is the same, just the bracket legs are painted in black to match the board colour.
They are preview boards ? final boards may be revised. Also if the fan comes on at certain temperature and once cooled then goes off than it's not too bad.
You can tell it isn't part of the socket like on the other boards.

+1 on the fan hate...I still need PCI (x-fi prelude- love this card) and want more than 6 SATA- which pretty much limits me to the asus sabretooth...or I might end up going with my first gigabyte board for a fulltime system (had a gigabyte board system for about 2 days, it was a flaky system though)
