AMD's first 28nm GPUs set for launch in 2011

Despite earlier rumors, AMD plans to launch its first 28 nm GPUs during 2011. Sources have said that AMD is planning to launch these GPUs during the first week of December, with one source specifying 6 December. Further details are not yet known – this could be a mobile or desktop release, and could be using VLIW4 (Very Long Instruction Word 4) or “NextGen” computing architecture.

Other sources have claimed that this will be a so-called paper launch, with mass production and shipping happening in early 2012. Small batches of these GPUs will probably be manufactured this year for OEM qualification and possibly media samples for early performance testing and review. Jonathan Horne

So it is an article that basically throws a ton of speculation at the wall in the hopes that something will stick. Seems like yet another traffic grab to me...

TSMC's 28nm wafer count is too low to be relevant.

My guess would be Nordic Hardware, looks just like the tables they've used before.

That would be INSANE if those specs are right. I dont see how they can be though. Double the ROPs, big increase in TMUs, lots of extra shader cores, a significant clock increase, the rumored XDR2, AND a giant drop in power consumption?

    Also, yes Nordic Hardware:

huum why NH take this little spec table we have allready discussed about months ago, and put it yet again on an article.. Thoses specs are only rumors....

As for the 7870 specs,... do you really think the reference model will use 2gb? the 7850 too ? lol, i can imagine it is possible for the 7870, but why put so costly memory size on a 7850.

Huum, my bad, i have not see they was use Expreview article as source.

It's pure speculation at this point. AMD has stated they'll release the first 28 nm products in "a few months" which suggests they might try to get something out before Christmas as was rumored. It's doubtful though that it's the high end coming first. A shrunk Cayman might not be inconceivable.

Let's face the facts here: TSMC's 28nm HP process isn't at the point where it can supply volume production of high complexity GPUs. They are supposed to bring their complete 28nm line up to capacity in mid November which makes it impossible to have a full high end product stack based on 28nm in stores before year end.

We also have to remember that "28nm" doesn't equate "next gen". Historically, AMD has taken the cautious approach to new manufacturing processes by introducing a "pipe cleaning" mid-tier or mobile GPU prior to anything else.

My 6950 (that is unlocked) first came with 2GB of video memory, I don't see why they would reduce it with upcoming generation, especially with how they like to sell high res gaming + eye infinity.

The 6900 series was pretty much the pipe cleaner, there really isn't a huge difference between the two far as I have read, with exception to the compute additions.

Since it's from ATI maybe they would be on time but since it's still going through AMD Bureaucracy we could do some math. Hrmmm
So December 6th x AMD 4+ month of general delays ÷ JF-AMD = Anywhere from December 12th - January 25th, Just my rough estimate.

the 6950 has not the same price of the HD6850 ... 7850 will not be a 300$ card ...

As for pipe cleaners, this not concern the series, this only concern new production process, 65-40-28nm... Essentially for test the node process, and how the production can be ramp up. 6xxx was made on the same process node of the 5xxx.. In general low cost chips are used, as there's less risk and it's a good test for the big one.

Now, who know ? AMD have maybe decided 2gb as standard for middle end reference too.
