    Yamaha receiver and FLAC

As of now I am using the mini RCA out from my motherboard to my Yamaha receiver which has multi channel inputs for just that type of use. My question is, what do you suppose my receiver would do if I switched to an optical cable and tried listening to a FLAC source?

When you are talking about RCA from your mobo this would most likely be the coaxial connection which is digital and the optical you stated is also digital and both are intermittently the same thing, they use the same technology to transfer audio just they both use different connections to send the digital signals. As for the flac audio file i presume you would be playing via media player this would work just fine as from what i know the signal is PCM and does not need decoding at the receiver as it is not bitstream, all is required for everything to work is that the media player you have supports the file for playback and that your receiver accepts PCM signal which i presume does as most already do and you have been using audio already via this coaxial setup.

Just so we are on the right page these are the different connections and their names.

You should have no problem using Toslink though I'd suggest you bypass KSound by using something like ASIO4All instead.

Bobsama i think this was only relevant with XP, with vista and win7 they use ioctrl to interact with the devices directly so there would be no noticeable difference.

OK, then I am currently using TRS. Three cables, one for front left and right, one for sub and center. And one for rear. Left and right. I am thinking of upgrading to a 7.1 channel receiver, but they are hard to find with the TRS inputs. I always thought it was called mini RCA.

its a common mistake, common enough that most people know the 1/8th/3.5mm/headphone jack as "mini rca"

All along the watchtower the watchmen watch the eternal return.
