Thread: AMD FX-8150 Bulldozer finally tested

What is going on here is Intel is a MUCH bigger company, has ALOT more researchers, and AMD was close to facing bankroupcy, ofc. the investers want value for their money... The segment is of less importance....
They were facing bankruptcy when developing the Phenom II, and, according to this review, that processor lineup is better/equivalent to this one.

Sad Sad Sad...even overclocked I doubt it can even come close as it is so easy to overclock the Sandy Bridges...
I was thinking of selling one of my 4.8ghz Sandys to play with Bulldozer but doesn't seem like much point with the volts and power required for the the performance gained...
At least for the masses the price of Sandys should drop a little bit...

AMD is performing very well in laptops....
AMD is performing very well in HTPC...
AMD is performing very well in netbooks...
    AMD is BLOWING for desktop/workstation...
I cannot comment server segment, as I do not have suffecient knowledge.

Small Form Factor, I'd pick AMD for the time being, I wouldnt even have any doubt that Zacate OWNS ATOM... The Sandy Bridge is really strong - Ivy Bridge is not much stronger, just lower power consumption at same performance... AMD is behind on this segment, and as Monstru clearly expressed, it truely hurts remembering the greatness of AMD64 FX (FX51,53,55,57,60) and then seeing this, mocking the legacy bigtime.
I wonder how much of their sales are mobile vs desktop.

Another thing I'm curious about is how it handles all the server apps. It is possible that AMD focused mainly on the server side and the architecture just doesn't do as well on the desktop side? Maybe? No idea, just throwing random thoughts out there

The one last thing I'm really waiting for on performance testing is how it does with WCG. That is what my main use of computational power is.

If it is for WCG, then they have truely flucked up as for marketing.

It would be as promoting a trolley for skaters.... Sure, it has wheels as well, but the use is not skating.

Cinebench 11.5 is a pretty good estimate of how much total power (throughput) there is for all the cores combined. Seeing as how BD can't beat the 2600K in it, this would suggest that the 2.6 GHz 16-core Interlagos is going to be in tough against even 6-core SB-Es at 3.3 GHz.

No real surprises here...historically, the quieter a CPU company keeps a new product, the crappier it ends up being.

Intel was tight-lipped regarding Prescott...and it sucked badly. AMD was tight-lipped on both Barcelona and now BD...same deal.

Your power consumption graph on page 14 has the colors reversed showing the 8150 using 93.12watts and the 2600 using 129.72, although you indicated the correct values in the paragraph bellow.

I suppose there is also a small chance that all the final BIOS updates for the BD won't be released until the day of the launch.
They still could have disabled a few things to see who is breaking the NDA...
If AMD is doing this, then, they really got some devious people there.

I'm just glad I didn't buy my motherboard in advance waiting for bulldozer to release :O
If next week shows similar results with other reviewers, I'll be picking up a 2600k.

3 more days for more reviews to pop out. I'm still hoping for better results, if not, i'll be happy OC my 1090t to 4.2GHz.

Well, very disappointing. I can't say I expected Bulldozer to outperform Intel, I was hoping it would be as fast as 2600K - but it's slower.

Oh snap... I forgot most important; CONGRATULATIONS with MOA WW!
    Thx buddy!!!

Why does Lab501 get to break NDA?!
In order to break an NDA you have to sign one first...
Your power consumption graph on page 14 has the colors reversed showing the 8150 using 93.12watts and the 2600 using 129.72, although you indicated the correct values in the paragraph bellow.
Correct, we just fixed that, thank you for noticing, and also thank M.Beier for that!

I suppose there is also a small chance that all the final BIOS updates for the BD won't be released until the day of the launch
Actually no, there is no chance, because you need reviewers to have time to test this stuff before publishing a review. Nobody makes reviews in one day...

I suppose there is also a small chance that all the final BIOS updates for the BD won't be released until the day of the launch

I know!!! Trust me, we retested many times, because we found this hard to believe even if the results unveiled under our eyes. We checked everything countless of times, and still get the same results. Unfortunately, this really is how Bulldozer is performing, and that makes me as sad as any other enthusiast in this industry!

Now the saddest thing is not only the performance, but also the way in which AMD tries to manage this. I heard from a little birdie that some folks at AMD will start calling press tomorrow morning to ask them how reviews are going and try to do some damage control (this reminds me of Nvidia calling press before GTX480 launch). Actually many of the press guys I talked to are a little bit puzzled and don't really know how to approach this situation. From my point of view it is pretty clear, the truth (no matter how much it hurts) is the only way.

Twilight Zone around here.......If this review is true, how is AMD expecting to get $260-280+ for the 8150p? It definitely can't beat a 2500k according to this review.
