OCZ SSD question.

Does anyone know anything about the
OCZ Agility 3 AGT3-25SAT3-240G 2.5" 240GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)?


I can get it for a real good price but some of the reviews on newegg are pretty bad because once you get it you need to do a firmware upgrade. Anyone?

Sandforce always has some firmware update or change you can do. Very complex software, deployed very fast, then patched up hastily.

In general, if you are worried about having perfect firmware you can't use SSDs yet. I had hopes that the new Intel generation would be more solid than Sandforce but we all know how that worked out.

Samsung has always been the bets on firmware and overall reliability. Look into the 470 series or the upcoming 830.

I have restricted my own SSD use simply to parking games on it. It's nice for the burst of random seeks when a new level or new 3D is loaded. But I have seen too many situations where SSDs ended up behaving worse than HDs. Very disappointing.

What do you use?

I save my money by not getting SSDs and put it into more RAM and raids of normal HDs. Overall much better system for more situations, same money and safer.

I do have one SSD that I use to park whatever game I currently like to play on, see above. It's some OCZ Agility. For this mostly readonly use it really doesn't matter.

raptors are junk compared to ssds, if are really worried about data (that u should be backing up) then get a crucial, they seams to die less. but for ocz they are the 1st to ship and ship the most so if u look at the product reviews people are pissed about firmware updates (they are easy like a bios and no big deal) and since they sell the most they also get the most failures but they have good service so u wont be out a drive long if it dose die.

there are lots of options, samsung and crucial are the ones that seam to get picked up by the OEMs and die less, intel is slow junk and ocz, corsair, gskill, patriot and the other sandforce vendors are the quickest single drive in most cases but they also have the higher failure rates but its not that many die (its no 680i)

Just get a SSD and automatic backup program to save your data to some other device if its important.

There is some risk of data loss, but in my personal experience, I've corrupted more data from overclock BSOD than from SSD failures.
I exclusively use multiple controllers of SSD as storage in everything (1- Gaming Desktop, 10- server rig, 1- Macbook Pro, 1- Alienware M11x, 1- Dell XPS M1210, 5 as mobile backup devices)..

Just read up and optimize your system settings for the SSD, and find out what is causing other people's drives to fail (and avoid it).

Definitely more reliable than rotational drives...

Corsair P256, Intel X18-M G1s and now OCZ Vertex 3 MAX IOPS. The Corsairs deteriorated about a year after the TRIM firmware came out, but a simple individual reformat in Windows (running on a different HD) reset the drive to original performance levels. Intel X18-M G1s also deteriorated, but a Zero Fill reset the drives. Finally, with my Vertex 3 MAX IOPS, I haven't noticed any slowdown yet <knocks on wood again>

let me clarify, i have a g2 and its really slow (my agility 1 smokes it, and the intel shudders under high load), then there was problem with the 320 killing themselves and the 510 is just a last gen micron consumer drive (crucial c300) that is set up to go slower for data integrity but then they had a bad batch with losts of fail and otherwise seam to die just as often (though its not common for ether). so when u look at speed and reliability when compared to the crucial m4 or c300 why would u go intel when u can get the same parts as their good mlc drive but it goes faster and is cheaper on the c300 or better with the m4, and when u look at just single drive speed the sandforce drives are beast.

in summation, if u were thinking of going intel go crucial m4.

SandFarce is nice and fast when the data is highly compressible, but when I compare 4KB writes on my Intel to a friend's SandFarce SSD I'm almost 6x quicker than him.

that means slow btu it should be reliable. the m4 is cheaper MSRP and normally can be found on sale i would get that unless its a really good sale.

Sequential speeds do not make any difference to performance of a solid state drive. Unless you plan on copying a LOT of big files all the time.
