    Dream Machine

Go and give a look to this dream machine for WCG. 8 CPU E7 at 10 physical cores each with HT. Total 160 Cores.
A 700'000 WCG points per day machine.

    http://www.supermicro.com/products/s...-5086B-TRF.cfm

Could not find how much it would cost fully loaded. I do not dare to insist ......... my dream would be shattered.

It is not the initial purchase cost that worry me (although I can never afford it probably), but the power and cooling bill.
2800W power supply will make your wallet cry.

    Edit:
Are you sure about that prize?
Intel says that series processor is atleast 2200 dollars each!

I made an offer request to Supermicro with a fully loaded machine that is 8 E7 Xeon CPU's at 2.4 Ghz (fastest) and 8 GB DDR3 RAM per CPU.
Let's see what comes. After that I want to compare the cost per Watt and per WCG points and runtime to see how such a machine will compare with 160 cores (13 X 980X CPU) of my solar system. Stay tuned.

That's gonna be one expensive system.
If the barebone itself is 8K€ w/o cpu, mem, hdds and pci-e cards.
Lets Do little Math shall we?
    8000€ - Barebone
    8x 3900€ - Intel Xeon E7-8870, 2.4GHz 10C/20T
    16x 31€ - 4GB DDR3 ECC REG
    -----------------------
    39696€

Well that's quite Expensive system now ain't it? Umm yeah unless i win in lottery
But what comes to Performance/U rack space density? Unbeatable!

    E: Wrong cpu model

As far as density goes that thing is pretty hard to beat. I would assume efficiency is probably pretty stellar too.

But from a cost standpoint it's crazy.

I think you could generate far more points for $50,000 with something else, mind you efficiency and density would be nowhere near as good.

Rough estimate on a Sandy Bridge 2600k single machine- $1,000? (Probably overkill a bit, but close enough)
One SB generates around 40,000 WCG PPD

$50,000 = 50 SB Systems (Most likely built in a farm format sharing PSU's)

    50 SB Systems x 40,000 PPD = 2,000,000 PPD

    150ish Watts per system x 50 systems = 7500 Watts

That would be one damn expensive farm, but when you are making 2 Million PPD who cares.

running a single machine at stock clocks would be nice though. With many machines comes many headaches, overclocking 50 machines and keeping them running 24/7 would be a full time job that I would never want. Having space for 50 machines would be challenging, 50 rigs need 50 plugs... etc. Fewer machines are much easier to manage.

Agreed! Managing 50 machines and 50 overclocks would indeed be a full time job. I'm already trying to think of a job title for that, WCG GRID DOMAIN MASTER. Done.

Hopefully if I had the $50k to drop on the machines I would be a wealthy philanthropist and had some random source of income, then I could have all the machines in some cool batcave like lab and I could spend my days managing all the systems and doing cool computer stuff. Sounds like a wonderful fantasy. haha

One of the reasons I use 2P systems. Easier to maintain. If I won the lottery, would seriously consider this beast. 8 grand alone for a bare bones system is pretty high. Maybe rent out computer time to help pay for this.

    I think a more reasonable estimate would be 800 euro's per i7 2600k.
    And 200-250 watts per system.

I can imagine that if you compare this beast with a farm of i7 2600k systems that would generate equal points to this. This beast actually might not be that expensive.
Especially if you take into account the cost of the space a farm that big would take, the management hours, cooling (quite the challange I imagine) and the inconveniences (like finding enough power plugs).

    200-250 is a little high for a 2600K. My SB does 155 watts @ 4 GHz. And it did 180 watts @ 4.6 GHz.

    1) You wouldn't want to even imagine the electrical draw of that thing and
    2) Those top 2400MHz 10 cores are close to $4000.00 USD EACH and thats here in the US.
Higher where you are I'd bet
