USB 3.0 on Crosshair IV Formula

Has anyone had any success using the USB3 ports on the C4F?

I bought a 32Gb USB3 thumb drive and it works fine on my Sabertooth, but using it on the C4F results in
MUCH lower speeds (~68Mbs on the Saber vs ~31Mbs on the C4F)...

At first I thought maybe it was the fact that I was using the 3012 Beta on the C4F, but I flashed back to 1902 release
and still get the same results. I even reformatted and went with a fresh Win7 x64 install and still no USB3 performance.
In fact, the OS says "This drive gives better Performance using a USB3 port" (paraphrasing), but I've tripple checked and it's plugged
into a USB3 port on the mobo (blue).

Maybe my board has a bad NEC chip.... (btw, I've tried a number of different drivers too)
Has anyone else had any luck with these ports?

    Thanks.... Dave

I was going to ask if you had the NEC driver installed, looks like you do...

    USB2 does 31 MB/s

Yes Dave I am also having this issue with my CIVF, but atleast my system tells me it could run faster if I put it in a USB-port *check... it's blue...wait a minute...*

I have an Western Digital External drive that's USB3.
It appears to be working at USB3 speeds, copying at 110megs/s.

This drive will do 31 Mbs on a USB2 port Beep, my previous best drive (Patriot XT) would only do ~28.
So the USB3 drive actually gives a little better performance even on a USB2 port...

nex_73: Thanks for the heads up Bro! I'll give it a shot when I have some extra time...

Interesting! - I just bought a WD 1TB USB3 drive the other day. When I plug it into the USB3 ports - nothing gets recognised on my PC.
If I plug the same drive into a USB2 port it gets recognised and works albiet at slower USB2.0 speeds.

I've tried everything 1902 BIOS with both NEC and the Renessa drivers to no avail slightly dissapointed

The ports definately work ok as I have my Razer Mamba plugged into it all the time (yes I've tried removing the Razer before connecting the WD also )

Oops - didn't notice theres new firmware in the link above - will give that a try - thanks mate.

You can install win7 embedded from the usb3 ports, that's all I know.
    Without usb3 drivers.
    And it boots dos.

I use them most of the time over the usb2 ports for my stick but it's a usb2 stick (crappy one at that).
So I can't say anything when it comes down to speed.

    Poor performance ...

I have read that the Crosshair IV formula's usb3 speeds are slow compared to other usb3 ports on other boards. One reason I read is that its running on X1 speed of the pci-e bus. So not sure what good drivers are going to do...

    zoomee:

On my board, Crosshair IV Formula if I plug my external into the one USB3 port the drive senses power but nothing gets detected in windows.
If I move it to the port directly next to it then it works 100%. If I plug just a normal flash drive in the port that didn't detect the drive that works fine too.

I purchased a WD Mybook Essential 2tb and changed the drive to my Seagate 1tb. I copy at around 110mb/s. So I assume USB3 is working

Not sure if the controller must also be enabled in the bios, but it's probably on by default.

    Thanks for the reply Reflex

Well I tried to install the new firmware linked to above but it just hangs for ages
I installed the new drivers also but still get the same on both ports - The drive gets power but the OS doesn't recognise anything is plugged in

I've also read somewhere that the USB3 cable that comes supplied with the WD drives is not very good, so have ordered a new one to try.

Wierd that it all works ok when plugged into a USB2 port - These NEC chips must be crap in that they aren't very compatible

Update: After a reboot it looks like one the ports have started working as USB 3.
Same as what you mentioned reflex - one port does nothing and the other port works ok

However, performance is dissapointing still - Starts copying data at 100MB/s then drops down to 70MB/s

I checked reflex and there isn't any process on my rig even close to that... Maybe your WD installed something that helps, 110 Mbs doesn't sound too bad!

If it makes you feel any better zoomee, I had the same results when trying to install the firmware portion of the above links.
It hung forever, the cores went to full load and Mem usage creeped up until I got an out of Mem error....
I did a system restart, installed the driver portion and got the same wierd system loading (and out of MEM) error as before.
Then I shutdown, rebooted and actually got decent speeds on my USB3 flash drive (~60 Mbs)...

I thought it was fixed, but when I fired the machine up again tonight (HTPC) it's acting really flakey again.
The flash drive is seen but can't be opened and it's causing system hangs and all kinds of wierdness.

I forgot I had a GBT 890GX-UD3H back from RMA. I set it up on the bench, and the USB3 port works as ecxpected on it.
Looks like I'll be rebuilding the HTPC this weekend....

nex_73: I tried that new firmware flash, and it worked without hanging, but it's still acting strange...
(I also reinsalled the linked drivers)

I didn't try them with a fresh WIN7 install, so that may be part of the problem.
As much as I hate to do it, I'm going to swap that board out for the GBT tonight and start from scratch.
I want to run all my drives with the AHCI drivers anyway.

    Thanks for your help man!

Yeah the new firmware linked above installed ok.

Rebooted and still no joy - neither ports working. Somethings one of them does but its flakey at best.

Surprised though that even when they do work I get worse performance than my USB2.0 ports!

    Ah well....

Tried these new drivers too. Neither usb ports recognised my external.
