Which Monitors Have Highest Pixel Density?

I am looking to get some new monitors. I currently run triple 22" ASUS monitors but want a little more real estate.

Which CONSUMER monitors have the highest pixel density? I am not looking for some crazy $6,000 professional display.

Here are my requirements:
1) 24-20 inches
2) Under $2,000 per display
3) very tight pixel density

I do not really game but do some CAD and photo editing as a hobby. So response times isn't my highest priority but it would be nice.

Driving the monitors shouldn't be a problem as I have an SR-2 with dual X5690's OC'd to 4.5GHz and three GTX 580's, everything is watercooled.

What is a good monitor for me to get? I will be getting three of them again also.

For that money you can buy HP ZR30 or Dell U3011. If you want to go size smaller than Dell U2711 would be my suggestion.

Geez if your budget is up to $6000, I say go for 3 U2711s. As mentioned they're the tightest pitch (.2335). The U2211H pitch is .2479. Three U2711s would run just over $2500. If needed you'd still have plenty in your budget to get a bigger desk.

I don't know if they'll fit the budget but Planar also has some crazy panels.

You'd probably have to look at Matrox or something for the graphics card though, I know the normal GeForce cards are limited to 2560x1600.

Dell U2711 is about the same.
You could also have a look at 23" 2048x1152 monitors, such as this.

I've been looking for the same kind of thing. I used to use an SGI 1600sw (17.3", 1600x1050, 110dpi) and loved the tight pitch.

Had to settle for a Dell U2211h as I didn't want to go over 24".. but it's still a little 'blocky' for my eyes

Also worth mentioning that the Apple is glossy (without the panel's standard anti-reflective coating, and with a glass cover), whereas the Dell is matt. And that the Apple can't be adjusted via OSD, but requires driver support for it to be done through the graphics card.

For $2000 a monitor, I'd rather have NEC/EIZO. Screw the rest.

In that price range definitely the NEC PA series 27". Apple isn't even a contender. Its LED edge light only covers around 75% of sRGB, whereas both NEC and EIZO cover 100%. No hardware LUT adjustment either. As for EIZO, you really only should only be looking at the CG series for serious work. Their SX series which falls in the OP's price range has very limited hardware adjustment/calibration options compared to the NEC.

For a 3 monitor setup I'd recommend that you get one NEC PA 27" with the NEC Spectraview package + custom NEC calibrated colorimeter. Use it to hardware match all 3 monitors for a uniform working environment.

The only downside to the NEC monitors is that they typically have a 2 frame input lag. The EIZO IPS based screens have on average 1 frame lag...it only matters a little if you're gaming though.

Speaking of the calibration software, I should that set up. It's usually about $300. I saw a refurb for $160 or so, but I still need to software to go with the colorimeter.

I think if you are doing photo editing you can't go wrong with the NEC mentioned above, get the spectraview software and you have nicely calibrated monitors.

In end you need to think about the quality of the pixels over the quantity, if there is any color involved. (usually color is pretty important for photo editing :-) )

I don't notice any lag w/ my NEC 30".

A 2 frame lag at 60hz (no vSynch) isn't that easy to notice and delays aren't always a constant during a game. In a back to back comparison you may begin to notice subtle differences though. It also becomes more noticeable in a game with a low lag engine. Valve and modified Quake 3 engines for the CoD games are pretty good in that respect.

I remember that there was an old ibm display the T221 that can display four 1080p files at once in a 22" format. You may be able to find one or there may even be a replacement out by now.
