The consumer PC market is one of very low margins (unless you're Apple) and it just doesn't make sense for HP to be throwing billions of dollars into a market with very little in the way of return... especially when they could be using those resources to grow the more profitable aspects of HP (like their business services group).
Petra is right, waiting until after you're losing money is just plain dumb. The article is wrong though, revenues from their PC division is 5% of their total revenue.

    So Dell, Sony, and....

Then a lot of "2nd tier" PC manufacturers. It's sad really. Granted, I build my own machines but I always felt confident in recommending HP tech to average consumers. There's no way with a clean conscience recommend a Sony product, so Dell is it?

I hope someone like HTC or Google picks up their PC manufacturing. Better yet, I hope HP pulls their head out of their ass and realize that turning a quick buck isn't always the best long term strategy.

In Canada it was 7pm today. I already picked up a 32GB. It honestly isn't near as polished as the iPad 2 but for $150 it is a steal.

Increadible. If the Touchpad was priced competitively from the beginning... I just can't believe such a big company can make that bad management decisions. You wonder how they managed to survive with Apotheker as a CEO?

I thought the days of extremely bad managers ended when Hector Rui(n)z was thrown out of Global Foundries. Guess I'm wrong. And those idiots earn big dollars. Crazy world.

Just in case i will want to take the time to explain you how the mobile market will merge with PC market, and not the invert ....... This will be a really usefull tool for access our personal espace ( TV, PC; workstation ) and even order them but never replace them ..

I will like to get a pc as powerfull as mine is in my pocket, but when im moving, it will be an useless power.. till i need some real computing power .. why i will want to put 2000 dollars in a device for my mobility for replace my solidhardware ... i want just something who can simplify my life for order my computing power.. not get it in my pocket when it's useless .. tablet will end as a communication device for access some of the service i want use from my IT spaces .. it will never replace them . ( TV, worksation, home pc, NAS, servers, i want to get access to my OS installed to all this devices and the part i need when i am mobile, access my data and be able to use a pc at distanc, yeah i want to be able to use my OS on my PC (or my pc )at distance, see on the screen the exact thing is happening on the screen of my pc.. and transmit / use data where i want if i want ) for me tablet will allways just be the possibility to access low computing data where i want.. not the invert . i don't want restrain me . Tablet and smartphone are part of your IT or personal computing spaces, they will never replace it.

They have never get the possibility to do it, and they will never have it ... it's a part of the system..... not something made for replace it ..

good luck bargain hunting, best way finding the $99 touchpads is if you call the stores and go there as they are sold out everywhere.

I'm hoping to get one on monday here in Germany. Though I doubt it will go down to 99 Euro. Under 200 Euros and I'm happy.

    Agreed with Lanek

For people who spend a large amount of time away from office/home there are laptops that suit them better. For me when I am away I do not need a Quad Core with Hyper Threading turned on, SSD and all that other goodness and a Tablet would suit me just fine.

The ones I have used just do not fit me for what I would like to do, or how I use a computer/tablet. Even tho Android is very nice I would prefer a more windows based OS so I wait for those.

I also do not need to carry more stuff around with me. If I need to look at the web for some reason my Galaxy S 4G does that just fine, but the problem is the screen is just to small for me. So I decided do I need another device to lug around and added extra expense for just this ? Not at this time.

Right now they are just another toy/gadget for me to play around with and nothing more.

As far as HP goes, yes there desktops are often junk and bloated with all kinds of crap software. I have to wonder tho., just what kind of software HP could get into that would generate enough income that would replace the PC sales. Seems to me that actually making a good PC to sell might be a better way to go.

Also... do any of you see a shift in users buying laptops now instead of a desktop PC ?
It's funny that on many gamer forums so many people are using laptops now and trying to play online games for example. Most of these laptops are just not up to the requirements unless they player is smart and gets a high end unit.

Got a Touchpad in the firesale. Would've liked to get a Pre3 as well. They were selling for 79 Euros! The homepage went down however, therefore I'm happy with what I got.

Never imagined the day I'll buy a Touchpad to be a sad one.

I never used Web OS but it looks good and user friendly combine that with decent looking phone with dual core cpu, amoled screen and put things that iphone lacks (like microSD slot etc.) and with good advertisement should sell without problem.

So samsung is out of the picture... Thank god

"Since Hewlett-Packard announced that it was exploring options to sell, spin off or overhaul its giant PC and consumer hardware division to focus the company on cloud and business solutions, observers have been speculating about its possible futures. Samsung just foreclosed on one of them."

Yet Dell is making it work i wonder how not to mention the small fishes like MSI/ASUS. The truth of the matter is you can get a cheaper deal from lenovo with similar hardware than a HP.

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834157876

When someone is shipping out as many PCs as HP one can do exclusive deals with the product producers. The other problem is the price of HP products are just nutty, in the states the HP costs way less than in most parts of Asia. Dell on the other hard has very slight and constant variations.

HP could put its act together but the new CEO seems like tool with the way he handled the situation.

it's only really fair to compare when both laptops have identical spec...
different graphics (I'm way too out of touch with laptop graphics to be able to off the bat tell if they're similar spec graphics)
the HP has a BDrom drive vs a DVD burner...
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16834246132 would be a slightly more similar comparison

    Nice little article here

    http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/...t-pc,3015.html

I agree with most of their views but not all. I still think HP is spinning of the PC unit prematurely and i have chatted with an employee who said he has no clue what is going on, HP India is so far clue less

As far as HP as a whole is concerned their stock has risen up after Samsung said they will not buy HP's PC business and a spin off was confirmed.
