Intel 8-Core Sandy Bridge-EP Processors Have 150W TDP

Intel's upcoming eight-core Xeon E5 processors that will be based on the company's high-performance Sandy Bridge-EP architecture will sport a TDP of 150W at 3GHz, and that may explain why Intel does not launch such CPUs in the desktop space (initially).

Hmm... As I understand 150W figure is based on CPU-z screenshot. Can it be a right metrics? (If I recall correctly CPU-z shows 185W TDP for Bulldozer ES).

Correct. Since CPU-Z doesn't support these CPU officially Yet!, that could be the problem with the wrong reading.

The TDP is read out of the processor's register, in both AMD and Intel's case.
These are ES chips, though, so that value may not reflect that of final silicon.

I was blown away by the title, but the reality of the situation is far from fact. It may end up being true, but for now there is absolutely no reason to believe it as it is a conclusion being pulled from an ES chip.

This covers the question of "what should be in the news?" perfectly. In my opinion this is something that should not be, or at the very least it shouldn't be without a [rumor] bracket in front of it so people know to take it with a grain of salt (that may be another story).

My reasoning is that we know with 100% certainty where the rumor is coming from (CPU-z reading a registry value), and we also know that it is not based on any statement by Intel or upon final, saleable product. Thus it is at best speculation... speculation based on samples which are known to come with odd/different configurations (eg. some ES samples of other Intel processors had HT disabled, or a core disabled, or only ran with certain multipliers, etc).

So I'm moving it to the Intel section and hoping everyone takes it as the speculation that it is.

This is definitely a rumor. But remember intel's official desktop SB-E roadmap: 4-6 cores ,clocks for 6C up to 3.3Ghz with TDP level (top model 3.3Ghz) of 130W. It's not unreasonable to think that SB-E 8C @ 3Ghz could have >130W TDP.

I'm still praying that the E5-2687W ends up unlocked...I know it's likely in vain, but I maintain the vigil nonetheless...

Let me re-phrase...I'm praying the non-ES production E5-2687W is unlocked.

Take a look here, the Final Stepping C1/C2 are locked! The pictures from the C2 Stepping are under NDA, but...
We have to find a way to find out how the "GlockGen" works.

    These are all tested..
