Help with a game of 20 Questions

I'm in a game of 20 questions with a friend who lives on the other side of the country. I email him a question, he e-mails me a response. If I can correctly guess what object he has, he will owe me $40. I am currently stumped and don't know what question I should ask next. Thus, I ask you XS forum readers, what should my next question be? A bit of background on the my friend, he is a retired statistical engineer and lives in an RV. His hobbies are astronomy and HAM Radio.

Here is what I currently know about this object:
    00. It is smaller than a breadbox. (This was a freebee)
    01. It has no electrical components.
    02. It is man-made
    03. It has no mechanical/movable parts.
    04. It was invented before 1900 AD of the Gregorian Calender.
    05. It was not invented to be used in a combat situation.
    06. It is not a tool for measuring a physical property.
    07. It was not invented to be a decorative item.
    08. It would most often be used in-doors.

    Any Ideas?

I'll keep this thread updated so you can continue to guess along with me.

I was thinking of narrowing it down by room. But how to ask that?

"Is the object in question most often in use in the kitchen?"

If there are no other suggestions by noon, I ask it.
