So atm existing members dont have to pay?
Nope, only for new members.
By joining a group like 3D Team, Crunching, etc... this yearly fee can be avoided by new members.

People are registering and paying the $1 fee, far better than having a closed registration.
Working as intended.

works perfectly fine for me???
What does "participate" exactly mean here? You can have an account, but have no rights to post stuff?
I've logged-out myself a few minutes ago and went through registration steps 1 and 2 attentively and there is no hint that you have to spend 1 US-$. (I didn't click "Complete Registration" of course, because this way I would create a double account.) I don't know how the payment is realized, but I'm pretty sure it's Paypal as for the 25 US-$/y supporter subscription. Wouldn't it be a good idea to tell people about the need of a Paypal account before they fill in their username, e-mail-adress, decipher the captcha etc.? Paypal is popular, but having an account can't be taken for granted. AFAIK you are not even allowed to register at Paypal before you are of legal age. This way you could reduce the amount of unused account and help people without Paypal to save time.
Start crunching (WorldCommunityGrid--yeahh!!) or start benching on an established team.

From what I can surmise, the registration/yearly fee subscribes your account into the "Registered" usergroup, allowing you to post, participate, etc. When the subscription ends after a year, you get deprecated to a usergroup that cannot post.
However, if you participate in one of the crunching teams or the 3D Team, staff manually places your account into a non-"Registered" usergroup (one that has a fancy color scheme for the name) and when the subscription ends the deprecation doesn't happen because you're no longer in the "Registered" usergroup.
In your case, Poci, you registered and had your account activated (placed into the "Registered" usergroup) before this was put in place. Because you never had to (and didn't) subscribe to the "Registered" usergroup, you won't be deprecated in a year![]()
Wait a minute. How about letting the new accounts post in the crunching/3D team, but restricting them to post in the other sections?
That way, our BOINC, F@H, 3D team etc. will not be restricted from people who want to join.
Just my 2 cents.![]()
After this change was implemented, one forum was briefly left 'open' (accidentally) for anyone to post in and it was well spammed. Of course, the entrance fee is not fully an anti-spam measure, it has shown other positives.
If someone is intent on participating on a team but not paying the $1, I suppose they could PM the team leader (PMs should function without subscribing to the "Registered" usergroup) and ask for an exception.![]()
Ohh, I see how it goes. Thanks!![]()
So am I that far away from a well-intentioned suggestion that it's not even worth to give atleast a STFU back? Registration page 2 still tells you "Registration to this forum is free", which is kind of misleading when you can't participate afterwards as your used to and need to pay in a specific way.
I feel like one of the O G now. Sup suckahs?
Sheesh...I surely would not get my panties wad-rolled over this minor fart in the airline. Diver Dan is not dismayed.
Wow, am I late to this debate. What's the reasoning behind this? Is it just to help alleviate the burden of hosting costs? I registered way back when I was in high school (2005-2007ish?) and this kind of stuff was not even an issue. I've never been a part of a subscriber forum before, and I can definitely see the pros of making sure people are serious about the content. But what else?
We rarely have to remove spam any more, we are still getting a good number of daily registers, and the funds do go towards upgrades and operating costs.

God's truth, it was all about the spammers.
You could login and spend the first 1/2 hour every day just banning them.
One night Vapor,Ashraf and myself were on when they hit us with over 70 accounts spanning porn..
Let's just say that it made for an interesting 20 mins to get rid of them all.
The price of a dollar won't hurt anyone but them as the one thing a spammer won't do is spend money! LOLOL
