Team Fortress 2 is now Free to Play
    Press Release - Valve
June 23, 2011—Valve, creators of bestselling game franchises (such as Half-Life, Portal, Left 4 Dead, and Counter-Strike) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), announced today that after four years and over 200 updates, its popular and critically-acclaimed online action game Team Fortress 2 (TF2) is now Free To Play (F2P).
The F2P announcement comes as part of the "Über Update". Released today, it is the largest content pack delivered to TF2 since it shipped in 2007.

New players interested in experiencing what PC Gamer calls "the most fun you can have online" will have access to training and offline practice modes, so they can hone their skills before jumping into the ever-expanding TF2 universe.
To celebrate the launch of the Über Update, Valve has released "Meet the Medic," the latest in its series of TF2 animated shorts.

TF2 is now Free to Play for PC & Mac players via Steam.

Of course not, it's truly welcome and probably powered by it's micro transactions for hats and the like.

I just really want to see ole Freeman finish his story.

though a lot of my fellow TF2'ers aren't very happy about this (blah blah I paid $20 for this game, etc) I personally welcome anything that grows the games user base. I've certainly got my money's worth out of it.

Edit: and when are they gonna do a full length TF2 movie, Meet the Medic was awesome!

According to steam I have just over 500 hours invested in TF2, I got my $50 from orange box, I'm not going to complain. They made an excellent game and they can keep on improving it however they feel is best.

I bought this actually instead of getting Orange box. I forget if it was $10 or $20, but I honestly don't care anymore as I bought it 3 years ago. The game has given me plenty of entertainment, since the release. I would rather have this go FTP to allow the game's community live on and die off due to having to buy the game. I cannot say there are many FPSes if at all that have supported all this time either, since coming out.. I will be hoping on this weekend to get massive killing sprees with my minigun of course!

People complain about a $20 game now being free.... 3 1/2 years after release???

These people must go friggin MENTAL when their £400 GPUs drop in value to £250 after 7 months

I think its a milestone though, how many other games are free to play as afforded by their creators?

812 hours logged. And happy as hell to see more people to shoot at.

I don't find playing TF2 fun. This is contrary to when I used to play TF or NeoTF. I used to play for hours.
