How to: Bench MSI Lightning GTX-580 for dummies

How to: Bench MSI Lightning GTX-580 for dummies
Everyone has their own way to do things but this is what has worked for me. This is how I bench heaven...

1.Cool to -50c idle in windows
    2.Glaze your pot
3.Start benching at stock speed and volts except memory bump +175v ish
4.Slowly cool down pot while benching to -135c (if you hear a loud crack start over and heat back up to -50c.)
5.While at -135c you can set clocks and volts while idling in OS 1450/1400 = +449mv Core +200mv Mem +000mv AUX
6.Pull down pot to -150c and start bench..you want to hit -160c by end of loading screen.
7.Slowly pull down to -180c during the first 2 or 3 subtest in heaven and just splash the pot enough to keep it there, do not fill up the pot (thats when I get cracking I believe)
8.Lighten up on your pouring for Test 25-26, let it warm back up to -170c by the end of 26.
9.Once the test is finished do not do anything until you pull back up to -140c or you will freeze when opening GPUZ (you want to be back around -140c anyway so you can apply clocks again for your next run)

***Dont apply clocks with temps colder then -145c***
***Dont Open GPUZ with temps colder then -145c***

-Device lost error = more vGPU or more Cold
-Test 20 freezing = more vGPU
    -TIM is very important
    -No secrets or hairdryer needed
-Remove the stock plate, I hacked off the mem cooling portion and kept the vrm side on. They get super warm even with sinks and dedicated fan.

Its seems a function of OCP or OVP is occuring at 1470/1400, causes voltage to drop to 0.300vGPU and will stay that way till power is cut at PSU.
Asked MSI for official fix, or to confirm HWBot posted version will update.

    Hope this helps

    great tips Splave,

i think TIM is very important, and with the right TIM, full pot benching is possible..

    great run man! great how-to.

    LIGHTNING FTW!

the temperatures on your "how-to" are different on each card but at all it's the right way to go.
unforunatly Crack not just happens with full pot, on a good (Fat pot) it happens just with full pot, on a pot what is not so heavy the crack can come much earlier.
The bad thing is that if you were running at -165° before the crack and used this temps for some hours benchning you aren't able to heat up to -50° without good chance to kill your card by condensation.

If you want to prevent the crack by 100% you need to do this

have you done the OCP Mod from the Lightning thread?

Wow, it's been a long time since a WR holder elaborated this much on how to bench the card.
