Nokia licenses patents to Apple, ending two-year dispute

While Nokia is going through some of its toughest days in its painful transition to Windows Phone handsets, there is a small light at the end of the tunnel. The long-standing patent dispute between Apple and Nokia, which started in October 2009, is finally over. Nokia emerged victorious with a new licensing agreement with Apple over its patents.

The agreement, which was first spotted by Engadget, will see Apple pay Nokia a one-time fee for the licenses to Nokia's patents, and royalties thereafter. Both companies are not disclosing any further details.

Nokia isn't in the same position that it was in the past, and I imagine that they were willing to compromise in a larger way now than they were before. They simply don't have the money to spend on such litigation anymore.

I still like Nokia, over the years I've had the 2110, 6110, 6310i, 6210 Navigator and now 5230 and each time they've been the best in their respective price ranges. None have ever given me issues with freezing or restarting other than the 6110 when the clips holding the battery in place (it was one of the old ones where the battery WAS the back cover) started wearing out after about four years (nothing I couldn't fix myself ). I like their phones and would like to see them go from strength to strength. I welcome the licencing fees Samsung should take a page from their book when it comes to intuitive menus (I also had an I-Glo, D900 and E350 as temporary phones (as well as a Motorola V600) and hated using all of them :/

IF that is true then they are much worse off than ever before. Going from the #1 phone manufacturer to not being able to afford the lawyers is a huge leap.

...i think they can still afford more than enough litigation.

there were rumors that because of them MS deal; apple decided to settle, rather than face nokia armed with not only their own patents (which are more than valid enough to win the case), but with access to ms patent protection as well.
