The bitcoin app is your wallet. Step one is hit pay me now on btcguild, step two is wait for them to show up in your wallet, step three is upload them to mt gox through your account on their website. Then sell them. I'm pretty sure that's correct.

I wish dwolla would hurry up and verify my account I'm getting impatient lol

You technically still can.. just buy a universal GPU block and think of something for the RAM and other stuff... but it'll be difficult. Much easier to just buy a full board block.

OK I think I got it going. Bouncing between 50-70 Mhash/s - this supposedly equates to $50-ish a month at current rates.

GPU usage is reported to be only around 2/3 however. Hm.

I found two 5850's locally for $225 total so if I get those I'll have some 5830's for sale most likely.

hmmm makes sense that they would use bitcoins but if I am not mistaken bitcoins are used for buying lots of other things. Much like you spend cash to buy some food at the grocery store while some other guy uses cash to by his cocaine....

I am not about to go out and buy any cards or anything but I am going to try it out with what I have and see where it goes.

Any idea how long it takes before this collapses on itself?

I just changed the TIM on my 4850 at work and the temps went from 105C under bitcoin to 77C the old stuff was pretty much liquid after running bitcoin for a few hours. the MX2 seems to be holding up much better haha

Hmm.... 10.12. Mind you this is on my 4870, the newer 5 and 6 series cards may handle the load type better.

I downloaded the latest ATI Stream stuff.

By the way, I wouldn't recommend 5830's unless you can't get 5850's or 5870's at a decent price. The 5830 is severely crippled vs. the 5850 and 5870. It's got a significantly lower shader and texture unit count, as ROPs at 16 are half as many as the 5850/70 have. I have been buying new 5850's at 110€/piece around here, which can do around 360-370 mHash with some overclocking.
according to the charts this statement is not true. 5830's have 250-300mhhash/s where as 5850 is anywhere between 240-380. I can see it being better if you can get the 5850/70 for dirt cheap, but the 5830's should produce much more for the cost.

I've been basing my calculations off of this chart -> https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Mining_hardware_comparison

I figure 1GHz on the HD 5830 should be do able on the stock cooler. At that point it'll be generating roughly 300MH/s versus 382MH/s with a 995MHz HD 5850. I'm banking on being able to run these cards with just a thermal paste change at 1GHz. We'll see in 3 days

Now that the HD 5830s are out I've started searching for HD 5850s. I've also been searching for single-slot HD 5770s but unless they are sub-$100 I don't think they're a smart choice.
    Agreed

Jcool makes me feel like I made the wrong decision...dammit. I might still have a chance to get that 5850 for $50. and will try to get that 5870.

Damn you guys and getting me to spend money; hope this pans out for us.

I'm doing this as a trial run, if this works, and offsets my electric bill enough (at least for the time being, the future of this is very uncertain) then I'll be able to afford to power up another cruncher rig again! And maybe upgrade the gfx card to produce even more... hmm...

Do I need to have the botcoin.exe running all the time on the PC with the GFX card that I'm going to use?
Or can that be on an other PC that isn't always running? And does it update from the pool when I have that PC running?

If you are experiencing screen tearing/huge lag you can fix it by adding the "-f 60" flag, at the cost of a few MH/s.

Yeah, prices are at irrational levels... especially on the 5970s... which are essentially the go-to card for mining (not anymore, though, since it's unavailable or ludicrously priced.)

I'm getting rather frustrated trying to actually get money from this process. I have gotten a few coins, sold them, gotten the money on MtGox, and then tried to send it over to Dwolla. I sent $17 that has not shown up in nearly 48 hours. I sent two $1 tests yesterday and those did show up, with an hour or so, then I tried to send $10 and that won't show up. I don't know if it's MtGox or Dwolla, but it's weird that the two $1 show up and the bigger transfers seem to have gone off into oblivion (or possibly one of their pockets).
