First benching with DICE, 1100T :D

Made a very large investment yesterday evening, a full $17 investment in some very cold substance
Well, more like $26...bought some lightweight gloves and canister of denatured alcohol as well.

Insulation could have not been better...I may have made one mistake in run one which cost me about 10 lbs dice and my sanity...I didnt wrap the pot initially with pipe insulation and I may have let some frost melt on the board. I spent over two hours troubleshooting and wasted a lot of dice keeping temps down as I tried to fix the problem

Oh, wanted to mention that rice is really nice...actually amazing for keeping condensation off...it dehumidifies the air near the board and eats up all the water...I didnt even have frost right near the CPU socket. Whole bottom board had a bunch of layers of paper towels (in the backplate and under the PCB), there were no problems there either.

In which I only came out with a single 32M run and some frosty pics in run 2.
I'll post them up a little later.

32M result was 13m 10s @ 5.2 Ghz, definately not very impressive but more middle of the road. NB was down some. I dont even have a CPU-Z valid, didnt get that far before dice was gone.

    EDIT

A shakedown run more or less, that’s what I like to call the first runs. Glad to see you had some fun with it though. Dice is a good way to learn before you try LN2 IMHO or if it works well for you staying with dice is fine to. Anyway good luck with the dice benching BeepBeep2

    Nice Beep....

I've been wanting to try cold for quite awhile, just never got around to buying a pot.
I've tried the winter air thing and had decent success but that only goes so far...

DICE always looked attractive to me! I have some decent chips that I think would do pretty good under cold.
I may have to look for a pot myself...
If anyone has an AMD pot they'd like to sell (cheap ) send me a PM, I'd be interested...

I'll be watching for your pics!

BTW: 5.2 for a trial run sounds pretty good to me, I know your 1100 isn't a gem, so thats pretty decent...

Yes, but it's kinda good practice to prepare some screenshots and pics before posting a thread, isn't it? I know it's a little bit offtopic, but XS is full of offtopics.
Not much constructive answers in this thread either, including mine . But you can't expect anything better from a thread without any results shown.
I'm usually not a hater, but there's too much ballast in here (the forum), imo.

Now you could hate me as much as you want

I'm not gonna hate you (even though i could hate you for having a better cpu than mine )...i just feel his excessive happiness for benching with dice for fisrt time, that he couldn't wait for having images and the rest of the post ready...i guess (judging by the time difference) he is probably at school now..

School wore me out yesterday, and I had school today, just got back. Felix was spot on tomorrow is last day and I've been rushing to get late assignments in :p I'm too obsessed with PC's and OCing
the board is still in its prep stage with pot mounted and pot still has denatured alcohol in it so it will take a while to unmount/set back up in my normal rig.

I could upload pics from camera on my netbook here but 1.6 Ghz Atom isnt up to editing 4MB pics.

    EDIT:
Hopefully a few crappy webcam pics will hold you guys over a few hours...

Last one is a pic of me.

it may sound like a cliche (dad-ish comment) but priority is school/university/education and family/job and then oc-ing and stuff....i myself (and i bet there are many people here doing the same) sometimes cannot concentrate on these when i have e.g. a new cpu....we are patient and waiting for you to take your time...

    Thank you for understanding.
I dont have a ton of time to OC unless its after the sun goes down, and even then I sacrifice pretty crucial sleep.

tbh I bought this pot a few months ago...I was really eager to get some runs in but that was seriously the first time I was prepared or able.

Thanks man, LN2 is due up but only suppliers in the area are Praxair and AirGas...AirGas quoted me $85 for a 20L fill + dewar purchase/rental yesterday...
It will end up being $5 per 1L if I dont haggle prices with them...

Base held right at -59c, what I did wasnt very efficient, I didnt break the dice down enough due to time constraints (which is funny because I wasted a lot of time) mostly I was just throwing pellet sized peices in...

Validation would have been in the 5.4-ish area, I know I BSOD'ed somewhere around 5.45...using a slurry of sorts with dice in powder I could have hit 5.5 easily I think

The Venom is a beast of a pot. That thing will spread the cold like no other though since it's so damn big! Glad you didn't have condensation issues.

I still want to try out one of Aaron Schradin's pots
Yeah this pot is huge...rev 5 comes with rectangular base and universal mounting, AM2 through 1155 so its a great multi purpose solution My initial worry was that it might not have enough surface area to hold load on LN2 but I dont think it will be too bad. It sure is heavy...

    Ok, now I'm satisfied
DICE is fun, but once you go LN2 it starts to look too warm It's still good for some of the platforms and if you don't have a dewar (like me) - still an option.
Sometime I think it would have been better if I had SS instead, cause the place I get DI from is too far away from home.
I know what's the excitement first 2-3 times, but when you get used to it, you'll want to try LN2. Fist time I had too much insulation, which was not needed, but understood it after I gained some experience.
I've benched 3 times with LN2, but none of them were with Deneb or Thuban, so I'm also eager to try them.

Keep pushing and most important - have fun!

PS: BTW, I got my Thuban to ~5.7 on dice and it might have more in it.

Well that makes sense, I could have pulled about 5-10c lower had I ground up the dice properly...maybe gaining another 100 Mhz or so to 5.5-5.6
You chip does about 200 Mhz higher than mine at same volts on water so thats reasonable scaling. I bet your chip could hit near 4000 NB on dice as well with 2 cores. (I was stuck around 3700)

Yes, 4000NB no problem on DI and 2 cores. That seems the strongest side of my chip, core clocks are not great. Well it might be well balanced core-wise, good for 3DMark, but when I go for 1M or 32M, there's no core which is a clear winner, they all clock similarly. I'm not sure if it still does the same clocks on water, it had been abused several times. I'm now on box cooler, 3500MHz 1.23V (if I remember correct). Using the water-cooling for other gear.

Not sure how 5.2GHz 32M compares to mine, because I haven't tried it with dice, only 1M. But it seems good to me, I bet it'll be even better next time, just try to drop your temps further

I better grab some PSC's before I do that again though.

Ram above 1800 was a PITA wih DICE...I got about 1780 32M stable and didnt try to push harder due to limited time.

A lot of times booting at 1900 C6 was fine, then you would try it again and mysteriously its not even stable enough to change bios settings. Ram had a block of DICE sublimating on top of them.

because of the condensation and massive voltage u've been applying to them.
