    Exclamation Slick deal

I just wanted to mention to you all that Newegg is having a sale on the Samsung 830 series SSD in the 256 GB capacity only for $169.99 if you enter the promo code:

    EMCYTZT2258

The sale lasts only from 9 AM to 12 PM PST. That means in about 15 minutes. Also, the promo code is only guaranteed to work as long as they have funds.

If you want to stock up on a few new SSDs to abuse, now would be the time to do so.

    Happy endurance testing, everyone!

They are now running normal and without problems.

    Hi,

So knowing what you guys know about the 830 / 256 gb model, do you think it would be up for a server class drive? I've got an Exchange server running with a regular sata drive that is just not up to the task. I'd like to recommend a SSD, but longevity is my only concern - the enterprise marketed ones are so much more $$$ than the 830/256gb...

    What do you guys think??

    Thanks,

    Alan

Go for it, but do a RAID mirror.

We are doing it with 2 Intel X-18M and they are doing great, they are installed since about 3 years. But we are not doing heavy writes on them, mostly reads.

Be sure to have a regular backup.

The day when you'll need to replace them, the prices of SSD will have dropped by 4.

I should have mentioned it, but yes, a RAID 1 would be the configuration.

    Absolutely!

I've been running a tool called SSDReady on the server for almost 5.5 hours that monitors disk writes so I can get an idea of how heavy the writes are...

    Thanks,

    Alan

A MLC SSD should do ok under that workload.

But monitor the Media Wear Indicator and make sure you replace the drive as soon as it reached end of wear life.

As from testing here, Virtually all SSDs that contain a working media wear indicator will operate without a problem until the wear indicator reaches the worn point. (exceptions include OCZ Vertex 4 and Octane drives, so don't use those)

SsdReady may even be significantly underestimating ssd life under this workload.

My thoughts exactly. I take any and all ssd life predicting software with a huge grain of salt...hell even the drives own wearout indicator is rarely accurate, almost always waaay premature but better safe than sorry re: server deployment. A quick look at the charts on the first page of this thread shows what I'm talking about.

Sorry, I've been traveling the past week. I'm looking into some new drives to test at the moment. I'll post an update on the 830 tonight when I get home, should be getting toward the 5M GiB mark.

Hello with my first post here,
Whats interesting with the Sandisk and the Samsung 830 is the temperature. The 830 shows over 50c but the Sandisk shows only ~25c. When putting multiple SSDs into a high-performance server, would the lower temperature of another drive than Samsung be a great advantage.

Not really. The 830 uses more power on load than new drives using sub 32nm Toggle flash (though idle is superb). You'd only experience those higher temps if you're continuously writing to the drive. Otherwise, it produces less heat. It's negligible for the most part.

He is an Ensign..... that is his job.

When this one eventually dies you should write to Samsung with the results of your little (maybe not so little) journey. Ask for a replacement because I promise you that a whole bunch of folks will be buying one of these drives as a result of your efforts. ...... They owe you that one replacement at least

will you repeat the test just to make sure it was not a lucky drive?

EDIT: Is there a sweepstake going on final figure?
