Watercooling :banana::banana::banana:! (critique my build too :p )

Finally picked out the last piece of my watercooling build. Its taken a few months to pickup everything that I wanted due to budget and availability. Man the quad rad is HUGE! much bigger than I had imagined. I'll probably end up mounting it on top of my P180.

    Heatkiller 3.0 LC w/Backplate - $35
    Swiftech MCP35x(sleeved) - $75
    HWLabs Black Ice GTX480 - $75
XSPC 140mm rad stand(should be 120mm but CrazyPC sent me the wrong thing) - $6
    8xYate Loon D12SM-12 - $30
    Swiftech Microres - $13
    10 Bitspower Black Sparkle 1/2" barbs - $15
    Lowes 10'x1/2" tubing -$3.50
Home Depot Hose clamps - $10
    32 McMaster screws 60mm + nuts - $20
    2 gallons Distilled water - $1.76 :p
    spare antifreeze

    Grand Total = $284.26

Nice, now put it together and enjoy. Also, drop the anti freeze, it's not needed. Just use some anti-algae drops for aquariums from Wal-mart or the pet store or get a silver coil.

I always wanted to know... how does a silver coil prevent algae growth?

@86 5.0L Everything except the tubing looks great to me (bad tubing can really be a pain and I know nothing about the tubing you bought, but if it's anything like Home Depot tubing I've used, it made me like nice tubing )

I havent decided on the antifreeze, I was thinking a 5% solution ought to work. i'll probably just end up getting anti-alge from walmart :p

Why wouldn't you go with Silver or Copper sulfate?

im going tomorrow to check it out, from what I understand, the plasticizer is what makes tubing soft, so a stiff tube will have minimum amounts of it. although it might be too stiff, we will see

planning out my loop order, Im pretty hapoy with it, the pump is suspended in the air but I might have to cut alittle more from the res->pump line

Any particular reason why the large standoffs on both sides and not just using blanks?

Blanks? Like gutted fans you mean? Well I read that 30mm was the optimal shroud size. Also 50mm screws didn't work, and I wasn't sure 55mm would work, so I went with 60mm

What do you mean? The space between the rad and fan?

lol :P oh geez - a 30mm gap is not the equivalent to a 30mm shroud. If you step back and take a look, logically you'll see that 1) having a fan with no ducting (shrouds) that far away will spread the airflow out over a larger diameter than the rad you're trying to cool which = wasted airflow. 2) you'll be lucky to have any airflow increase by having the fans in pull on the other side that far away as well. 3) toss away 4 of those rad fans in the drawer for now. Just adds extra noise for no reason. You have a quad radiator for just a CPU... 4 fans will be more than enough even on the lowest speed possible.

Also, it would be a good idea to use some foam under that pump to dampen it. I just might not see them, but why am I not seeing any clamps? Don't run that loop without them, especially as a beginner and even moreso if you plan to hang that pump off the tubing run from the bottom of the reservoir. You're just asking for it.

One last tip - see if you can lift that radiator off the top of the case with some foam as well. Your ears will like you for it

    1. I didn't say I was going to leave it like that, custom cardboard shrouds will be made

    2. I just ran all 8 at full speed, which is still quieter then the window unit blasting at 76*, plus I plan to add a GPU or two in the future

    3. I was just making the layout I know the tubing needs clamps, plus suspending the pump means I can get airflow under it, no damping needed(unless it vibrates enough to hit the side of the case)

    4. I used the 140mm stands to lift the rad of the case

Ah cool, was going to say, the loss of air pressure would be a pain plus the heat generated from "hot-spots" off fans wouldn't be overly large to warranty such large stand offs.

But all is good now that intentions have been laid out

You going to do a build log?
