ASUS Maximus IV Gene-Z launched today

As you know Intel today officially launched the Intel chipset Z68. Simultaneously ASUS announces the "meanest" motherboard based on this chipset: Maximus IV Gene-Z.

It has all the Z68 goodies: Lucid Virtu with both d-Mode and i-Mode + Intel Smart Response Technology. The output from the integrated GPU is only HDMI but that's ok considering most users will probably use Virtu d-Mode with a discrete GPU. Even if you use i-Mode, HDMI output is enough for conecting your PC to a LCD / Plasma display.

In 2-3 weeks, ASUS will launch also Maximus IV Extreme-Z based also on Intel but whis one will support only d-Mode because will not have any video output from iGPU.

Thanks for the link! Having just a HDMI makes sense, people won't use it primarily, but it's a great back up video out. 12 USB ports in the back . .

Great for when you're caught in that awkward period where you've sold your old graphics card, but the new one hasn't yet arrived

Can that HDMI be converted to dual link DVI using a converter without issues? I'm asking because my 120Hz monitor requires that, and I have no experience with converters. Shame I will have to use one...

Yes normally, but not on this MB

..because Intel Z68 FDI don't support dual link DVI/HMDI. The only H67 and Z68 motherboards with support for larger resulotion than 1080p are the ones with DispalyPort!!

the board has to support a dual link hdmi interface, but only a very limited number of vga cards support this (you need 10 extra pins and a wider connector) and hdmi 1.4 dropped dual link support in favor of a higher performance single link tmds signal

an active adapter is required to transfer hdmi 1.4 formats over 1920x1200 60hz into a dual link dvi signal

Are you sure? The adapter I linked to has 19 pins and HDMI 1.4 on the Gene-Z has also 19 pins...

You need a type B hdmi connector for dual link support. As far as I know, nothing exists with it.

Display port would have been the best thing to include as it would support anything from vga to dual link dvi. (120hz/hi-res)

you need a 29 pin hdmi type B connector for dual link as said in an earlier post and i don't think that there are any consumer devices out there using this connector...

to get dual link dvi you need to buy an active adaptor (and the only dual link adapters i know are displayport only) so you're out of luck

i still don't get it why manufacturers don't use dual mode display port connectors on their boards, my latitude E6410 has this connector and adapters cost around 5€

Looking forward to a review of this The ROG Gene boards are stunning, shame about the power efficiency compared to other boards though.... I hope Asus have improved it

    Just announced...

I don't think this was launched yet. The official press release that TechPowerUp has published just says "announced."

Wow the whole HDMI thing sucks. I guess I'll have to buy this one regardless, it's the only Z68 mATX board with acceptable VRM and VRM cooling for some awesome OCs IMO.

BTW, since HDMI 1.4 allows for high resolution/refresh rates while still being single link, is it possible to use an active adapter to do the HDMI1.4->DVI-DL conversion?

D mode mainly uses the discrete GPU while I mode mainly uses the integrated GPU.

According to SweClocker's benchmarks D mode reduces power consumption by around 1W in idle while having negligible impacts on performance compared to having it disabled. I mode reduces performance, increases power consumption and breaks some applications rendering it completely useless.
