Update: I must have started pushing the right buttons, I've actually gotten a response from Areca support this time! I suppose we'll see where that goes after all

in the past areca has been very helpful to me with support issues. hell they sent me a free 4gb cache stick just because there was limited availability. not sure of others issues, but when it comes to them replying and what not, i get great service!

Ditto, they DO reply (not saying it helped with lost data ever, but they were responsive to other issues and questions).

I'm tempted to put one of the Zalman all-purpose coolers on my 1220, but the controller chip looks like an old Socket A littered with transistors (don't think that's the word I'm looking for) on the top. I'm thinking about getting some sort of insulation material like a very thin foam or rubber to cover them then install it.

Just get a silent 12cm fan. Arecas will error if their ASIC goes over 58*C (word from their support) and it gets there even with a fan.

Got mail from Areca about Areca 1880 series getting ~70 degree without a fan:

They really get hot and our cards is specified up to 90 degree
Still no Error from Areca 1680ix 12 or Areca 1880ix-24. Areca rulez

Still working on finding out whether there's an official issue with my card or not, but as a fun fact after removing the HDD that possibly had issues and rebuilding the array with one less drive (which should be easier...) the rebuild time was about the same.

According to Areca tech support, it should take around 4 hours for an array my size with foreground initialization, though they might have overlooked that they're 5x00rpm drives... but even three times that is still only 12 hours, which is much more reasonable than two full days.

Maybe, these were previous and quite different IOPs than the one on

Yes, it still rules, too bad you're still not showing us some real copy speeds

    Serra,

Did you ever find out the cause for this?

I know this was not mentioned, but by any chance did you have a BBU connected while initializing? I have seen the initialization come to a crawl when a BBU is connected.
