Question for you gpu guys and fan controlers.

Well i have a sunbeam PWM, and i have it setup, and it works great.

I was wondering.. is it possible to get the PWM header off my GPU's instead of my board and tie it to the unit so the PWM is controlled via GPU load and not CPU load?

So far i have my fans which are tied to it to only rev up when the cpu temps get X.

And well, its kinda difficult to fine tune the settings when your cpu rarely drops below 30C. :\

So i was wondering.. is there a way we can just change the header so it takes the same header as the fan header on the gpu, and tie it up that way?

Its my fault.. and no im not sorry about it either.

Do you have access to an oscilloscope? You could just power the GPU and then check the pins on the fan header for a pwm signal out. Just be careful, you'll want a 15-25khz (probably 25khz) square wave signal, not the tach signal (not sure what that outputs as...I'm guessing sinusoidal though)

well looking at the stock 580 heat sink, it looks like its a PWM.

    4 plugs.. so i assume + - rpm pwm.

I was gonna take a small 9V battery, and see which ones are + and - and by default the remaining 2 should be RPM and PWM.

The sunbeam takes the RPM and PWM, so i was thinking...

go out to frys... buy a head which is compatiable, and then splice new headers on it and tie it up to the PWM on the Rheostat.

Its just right now the only PWM i have on the board is the stupid CPU one.
And as i said.. my cpu has very little variation from idle to load, so having it on PWM is absolutely pointless.

With Speedfan it is possible to link Gpu temperature to Cpu fan header. This is how I have my cpu fan header set up ( I have 6 PWM fans on radiators connected to it) :

I have CPU, GPU and water temperatures all linked to Cpu fan header, which ever temperature sensor requires most cooling is the one that really controls fan header because of that MAX of speeds setting.

Be careful with that, you might take out the rpm monitor or PWM receiver if you guess wrong (pwm or rpm to ground)

you see thats the thing... i dont want to run speed fan.. lol..

i already have too many software running in the background...

i was hoping to have a hard bios solution if possible.

Not sure if this is what you had in mind but you can connect the gpu fan header to a 3pin fan header by using a PCI-E Express Cooling Fan PWM 4 Pin / 3 Pin adaptor which can be found on ebay

Woah...is that fan control tab part of the new 4.44?

    I don't have that tab...in 4.42

Off to searching for a download...

It's new in 4.44 but it's still a beta so you will have to register at Speedfan site to download it. Seems to be working fine except that Advanced fan control option always resets when program starts, always have to remember to set it on again at startup.

this is exactly what i was asking.

but i would need a direct gpu pin to board pin header, which i can fabricate.

But i was worried that PWM signal, and RPM signals were different on gpu boards then mother boards.

If the manufacturers both stick to the PWM for 4-pin fans specification (source), I'd say you're safe .

I second the use of an oscilloscope to check the signals of each pin. Make shure not to short pins together. The PWM signal will be a square wave.

i was gonna test the fan directly.

if you put a + and - on the fan... and it spins even if you flipped it, then you got the + and ground wire.

That means the last 2 must be the RPM and PWM.

So then u would just need to see which is which, and then isolate the PWM.

Also i dont think a 9V battery will fry out a fan thats raited for 12V unless the fan is a 6V fan?
Anyhow im gonna order the plugin inserts for the gpu fan header and give it a shot.

i'll probably test it on an older nvidia card incase i do short it. lol... that way i wont miss anything.
