    Power Supplies and OC

I see alot of top overclockers using Antec Gold Series Power Supply, is there any difference in overlocking between an Antec or a Sapphire Pure bassed on enermax revolution technology ? I own one of those and i was thinking of replacing it if there will be any OC improvement with an Antec or Cougar PSU.

it depends on your load, the enermax is very good. 1250s and 1050s.....and they'll be out soon(4-16months) with the max-revo series...

if your load is less than 500w..don't worry bout power supplies...

Well i own the Sapphire 1250w version. Should i worry about loads over 500w on this monster ? i was kinda worrying about the voltages since its a multi rail psu i doesn't load to much any of the rails, i was doing furmark on a asus 580 direct cu II 930gpu/4600memory and the 12v rail had 12.31 on idle and 12.30 on load using a digital multimetter on the exact rail that powered the card. I thought its kinda much. Alot of ppl recomand antec and cougar, my load is between is arround ~550W. Should a better power supply improve the oc results ? if not i will keep the sapphire for a long time since its 1250w

    1. that 1250 monster is good...its a rebranded enermax 1250...but i think you already know that.
    2. 10mv drop is nothing...........some power supplies like the hx1000... start @ 12.1v on load ...goes to around 11.9v .....200mv...need i say more?
    3. that power is supply is single 12v rail.....with ocp for protection..the current limits is just for protection. thus multi railed(ocp)

Yes i know its actualy a enermax revolution inside, well i wasn't worring about the 10mv drop, i was worrying to see 12.30v isn't that a bit high ? i mean the ideal voltages are close to 12 from waht i know its more then oviesse that i have a good power supply and i should keep it!

Well that was the voltage messured at the 8pin pcie, they go directly into the video card, and i managed to recently burn a 580 direct cu II after only 2 hours of oc-ing it. I got my money back cause it happend in the first 3 days and now waiting to get either a matrix or msi ligninthing. I was first blaming the PSU for the high voltages

I was trying to get the max clocks on the gpu, it was outside the case on a bench table with the fan at 100% it just died i coudn't run any 3d application for more than 1 min.

I was somehow dissapointed of the asus 580 direct cu ii, i could had got a new vga card but i actualy asked for my money back since this happend 2 days after i got the card. I will get the matrix i guess or the msi lightning but i first wanted to be sure that my psu is ok so i won't scrue up again another vga card. If you say that 12.30v is ok and there actualy no danger then i guess i just had bad luck with a bad sample of the vga card. I chcked some pictures of my PSU and u are right, the multi railing its not like the exermax version witch is real 6 rail on the pcb.

So as long as load isn't approaching rated wattage, any quality PSU will do a top job at extreme overclocking? For example, my XFX 750W is pretty high quality, but isn't going to power any multi-GPU extreme overclock... would it do about the same job powering just an extreme overclocked CPU as a high quality 1200W unit?
Signatures make my posts look huge... but I'm not humble enough to completely remove my signature, so I kept this note explaining it.

You got to worry about peaks when you are overclocking, yea maybe it fits within TDP, but when you OC TDP is all but nothing.

I measured with my wall socket, account for efficiency and losses, and figured that at 1.1v my GTX 570 reference was pulling 80 watts more than TDP at only 900/1000.

I have a XFX 650 i think they are great PSUs don't get me wrong but it can't handle my GTX 570s in SLI and my 990x OCed, that is a job for my sparkle 1kw. and when both were OCed i saw peak at 980watts from teh wall, even though this PSu can push something like 1250watts on the 12v rail. BTW its a new unit, sparkles first shot at the big top, JG rated it amazing in performance, tieing the AX1000.

so you tried a 650w psu on a gt and sli'd fermi... of course it wont' work.

and you're talking bout peak power...from dc power...don't confuse the two.
