vern, i've made what you've asked me
my sli setup
nice , but' i've got a question, i've got this
coming with the RIIIE, is that ok to use? for a 2way?i'm asking because i'd never got a sli before now, and i see you using another type of sli bridge for 2 cards .. apart the fact that's the only one i have right now, so would it works the same?
have to go for a new card and currently i am choosing between the asus CUII and the MSI Lightning. which one would the 3d gurus prefer ?
tia

Well both are good cards, ample VRM for longevity, but seems there are some bum msi cards clocking really bad, havent seen anyone report an asus card clocking as bad. Some are good though, so assuming an equal probability of getting a decent clocker out of the two, and if you have no brand preference, go with the cheapest. Also consider the asus is triple slot cooler so if you need the space it may cause issues. If you are just gaming with it casually why go non reference at all? Reference cards are solid bits of gear and may be had for less than either non reference card you mentioned.

this is my sli ...
well, many thx for the plety infos. ok, i see.. i have no brand preference and if there r some bum msi cards available then i should be better with the asus. due to the triple slot cooler i have no problems.. will be watercooled on arrival day.. i thinking about these two cards cause i have seen that both of them have enough "space" to the top and I appreciate the overclocking potential of these cards.. thats the main reason i will take this non reference card

Watercooling is easiest on reference cards as they have full cover blocks available, my temps are great. If you run non ref, you can only cool GPU as no full cover blocks available afaik.

DUMO means single gpu block will do the job better then a full cover and with a good fan in front of the vrm and ram it will be ok then with the temps.

Guys, does any 580 offer better overclocking potential on water? Will a direct CuII clock better than a ref design or a Lightning? Or does it vary anyway?

If you are interested in purchasing full cover blocks I would recommend buying a reference card e.g. vanilla 580 or an oc varient. It all comes down to the binning and in some cases a vanilla card gives better OC performance than a stock OC card.
If you would like to buy just a GPU block and use heat sinks then buying a non reference card is an option for you. These cards usually OC much higher which imo is due to binning and better quality components (VRM's etc).
I went for a vanilla 580 and intend to buy a full cover block for it.

I should have mentioned, I have an EK vga supreme HF on a GTX580 vanilla now, with the base of the stock cooler left on to cool the rams etc, it has benched at 995 max (not always stable there) with voltage maxed at 1.213v, so if I sell and buy a non-ref I want it to be worth it. What chance is there of a Direct CuII or Lightning passing 1000mhz benchable? My temps havent hit 50c yet under benching load with it cranked right up so Im very happy with the block.

MSI GTX 580 Twin Frozr. Haven't mod it in anyway, no bios flashing or even replacement of thermal paste. All air with relatively high room temps (27C and it's 2AM).
