    [un]official GTX580 Overclocking Thread

Noticed something rather outlandish for this site of xtreme enthusiasts; we don't have a thread dedicated to GTX580 overclocking.

All general discussion, benchmarking and modding is to go in here

That is not the general GTX580 overclocking thread, read the title.

Isnt 1.285 a little to high and might kill the GPU or blow up the VRM ?

Basically it has like 1-2fps performance boost?

    @Topic

Is there a GPU block that can fit on the 580 while the stock VRM/RAM sinks unibody is still attached?

I have something strange, my ASUS GTX580 is clocked @900MHz and mem 4200MHz with 1.1000V and my GTX580 makes a whistling sound or a buuuuuuuuuuhhhhhh and a booooohhhhhhh real light when he does 3D rendering.

Temps are 61 degress celsius on 100% load (furmark, OCCT) and during ATItool when the cube is standing still to detect errors it makes a peeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep.

No crashes or what so ever but can somebody recall this or know this sound, is it the proc or the capacitors and is it dangerous?

I touched the VRM's and the are hot but not to hot to touch.

Cooler is a Shaman cooler and i used a long heatspreader for the VRM's of a GTX280/285 GPU.

Yeah i know, virbrating of capacitors, i experienced it before but mostly they go like bzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.

But the difference here is that it's 2011 and the thing is making different tunes, peeeeeeeeeeeee and wooooooooohhh, depends on the application.

During Dawn of War 2 i hear the low pooooooooohhh and during ATItool it goes high like peeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee (this is no joke or a fib btw)

Does somebody else experience this or most of the PC's have too much fans to even hear this and next theory is is that the standard GTX580 cooler covers the whole card so the noise will be smothered/ dimmed??

It's getting up there, but the Direct CUII's are built like tanks, the VRM has been pushed over 1.5v and has held up fine. A reference card would be hurting if you tried it.

Nice info, really seems to make a difference at higher GPU clocks which makes sense.

Wow man, getting closer to 1100MHz GPU on water!

It's not caps, it's coils (chokes) that whine. It's a kind of resonance due to current flow and the pitch varies depending on the FPS of the rendered scene - higher FPS gives higher pitched sound. It's not something you should be concerned about and it's not going to damage your card.

What you described is the very thing I experienced with my GTX285, lucky enough not anymore with the GTX580.

Shouldn't there be some sort of standard for posting results? That way persons can easily compare their results.

Put 2 high rpm fans in front. Full cover imo not as goos as single gpu block, it do its job to cool gpu 100%

60 FPS in all games, same as old cards......You sure you don't have VSYNCH enabled? If so, turn it off and see what your FPS are.

Yeah the GT200's all did it I think, my 580 doesn't but maybe his card just does, point is its not going to break it from an electronic standpoint, but it may drive him mental

I'm not overly phased personally, it's just a general thread not something like the LinX 4.5GHz thread. Cards aren't that complex, you have vgpu and 3 speeds and people usually do mention what they're on.

Feel free to post whatever you want, if someone wants specifics they can ask.

Ok i find out that my friend has the same thing with his GTX570 MSI brand, during ATItool error test he has the same high pitched peeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee and during a game he has the wooooooooo or pooooooooooh so you both are right, it's just how the made the PCB's, nothing to worry about.

Oh and the reason why we can hear it clearly on his GTX570 because he has a different cooler also so nothing that can block the sound (naked PCB).

Oh btw tip for overclockers, difference ingame from 900MHz to 950MHz result in 2-3FPS more but you need a bit more voltage to obtain stable clock and you will get higher temps in my situation it will result in 7 to 9 dregees hotter so it wasn't worth it.

People that use watercooling or any other cooling solution that won't be needing the power pins on the PCB of the GPU you can best set fan min and max to 0%, you need less voltage for your clock.
