no PCI :'(

After x58 I'm giving up on intels "high" end platform. And the constant socket changes are pissing me off. Come on AMD!!

Nice to see the increased PCIe lanes and the inclusion of more than 2 SATA 6GB ports. Looks to be a nice replacement for x58.

Looks good for the most part.
I don't see the point with including ANY older gen sata's though, might as well make them all sata3.
And why no 8x core's?
I can understand that they think the performance will still blow amd out of the water, 8cores or not, still... for a cpu's that you know is gonna cost over $1000 it should have the same amount of cores that the competition has.
I don't mind having no pci slots, alot of board's screw up the layout when they have to put a pci slot in there.
And most things you can get on a usb stick instead of a pci card.
Excluding dialup modems which win7 doesn't officially support anyways (works though).
Maybe some of the older x-fi's, the supposedly better ones before they went to pcie...
That would kinda suck...
I can't wait, hopefully it will come with 8 DIMM memory slots. Having no PCI is great too, forget those stupid legacy slots. 14 SATA and USB is just overkill but great.

Yea, Intel could learn a thing or two from AMD. Im pretty tired of seeing new sockets every year while my co-worker can use his 4 year old X2 in a brand new released AMD board.

They usually keep the same socket for two WHOLE generations. LGA1156 became an exception due to cutting costs.
Ivy Bridge will work in 1155 right?
On the other hand, AM3+ still looks short lived to me, unlike how AM2/+/3 was. It's successor will probably have a longer life, with included PCIe.
Quite a change eh? I thought 8-core was going to be norm. Only 32x PCI-E 2.0? WTF that is less than X58. Also no native USB 3.0? Talk about stagnation.

Hey an upgrade Going to be 3 years this fall for the X58 boards so this is a welcome site with new items. And ridding of older tech is nice from the boards. Save the money or put in higher grade items please!
Constantly changing? The 1155 ones that have changed with the past gen. X58 has stayed the same since the release back in late 08. So it will be nearly 3 years on the same platform. Pretty good consider that a lot has changed. Welcome the change though yes in AMD you can upgrade the processor multiple times in the same socket with newer gens but your still missing some features of the newer boards then.

A lack of USB3 is likely to be a business decision. Intel has never been gung-ho about USB 3 support as they're trying to launch LightPeak.
Particle's First Rule of Online Technical Discussion:
As a thread about any computer related subject has its length approach infinity, the likelihood and inevitability of a poorly constructed AMD vs. Intel fight also exponentially increases.
Rule 1A:
Likewise, the frequency of a car pseudoanalogy to explain a technical concept increases with thread length. This will make many people chuckle, as computer people are rarely knowledgeable about vehicular mechanics.
Rule 2:
When confronted with a post that is contrary to what a poster likes, believes, or most often wants to be correct, the poster will pick out only minor details that are largely irrelevant in an attempt to shut out the conflicting idea. The core of the post will be left alone since it isn't easy to contradict what the person is actually saying.
Rule 2A:
When a poster cannot properly refute a post they do not like (as described above), the poster will most likely invent fictitious counter-points and/or begin to attack the other's credibility in feeble ways that are dramatic but irrelevant. Do not underestimate this tactic, as in the online world this will sway many observers. Do not forget: Correctness is decided only by what is said last, the most loudly, or with greatest repetition.
Rule 3:
When it comes to computer news, 70% of Internet rumors are outright fabricated, 20% are inaccurate enough to simply be discarded, and about 10% are based in reality. Grains of salt--become familiar with them.
Remember: When debating online, everyone else is ALWAYS wrong if they do not agree with you!
Random Tip o' the Whatever
You just can't win. If your product offers feature A instead of B, people will moan how A is stupid and it didn't offer B. If your product offers B instead of A, they'll likewise complain and rant about how anyone's retarded cousin could figure out A is what the market wants.
Well, duh.
At least AMD buyers have an option, if they feel like those new features aren't worth it they don't have to buy it. You can't turn that into a con.
Many buyers got the cheap 920 and now they have to pay up the double for a worthy successor (970) two years later.
At least I didn't see that coming. Sure, 6 core would be expensive, no doubt about that, but I thought the price would go down more than it has. Lack of competition I guess.
On the other hand, the 920 is very good as it is, but I don't think most 920 owners really cares if the platform survived 2 or 3 years, when an upgrade is so expensive anyway.
what about PCIe 3.0?
your buddies 4 year old X2 also struggles in Minecraft..... also if your buying a new mobo or CPu you need to get the other to make the most of your upgrade anyways on AMD or Intel...
X58 has been around for 3 years it's time to change it. LGA 2011 is to be expected with the changes they made to the CPU's

Physx: Evga GTX 560 2GB
Sound: Creative XFI Titanium

PSU: Corsair 1200AX (Fully Sleeved)
Storage: 2x120GB OCZ Vertex 3's in RAID 0 + WD 600GB V-Raptor + Seagate 1TB

Agreed, but in the end it doesn't hurt to have the option.
In many scenarios with AMD you're not forced to buy both new CPU and board, just because one of them stops working.
You're also not forced to buy an outdated CPU if your current one dies, just because your board is old.
Going from a 90 nm X2 to a 45 nm X4 is a great step, even if you have to stay at 95 W and have a slower HTT.
Maybe it's not xtreme in any way, but I still know a lot of people who like it.

Finally in my opinion. Good riddance. Out with the old and in with the new. If you really really really need to run a legacy PCI card, get a PCI-E->PCI adapter.

I'm more and more irritated with PCI. It gets in the way most of the time. I had to put my Ceton card on top of my Graphics card because the other 1/4x slot was coverd by the Dual slot graphics card. The only other option was to use a 16x slot that would have dropped the graphics card down to 8x. An idea is don't put ANYTHING next to the 16x slots as 90% of the cards are dual slot and replace the PCI with 1 or 4x PCIe.
Well I'm hoping it's the end for pci and the shorter pcie slots.
Might as well make them all 16x slots.
You can put a 1x, 2x and 4x into a 16x, even though the card is much shorter.
