if it says AMD right above the pcie connector it's reference, otherwise it may or may not be.

Head shot! It seems that my HD 6950 2gigs is a reference one. Itīll be good news if they release another heatsink for the reference designs.

So no chance in hell of a version for the original reference design?

We should be getting really close on this release shouldn't we?

I guess still no word on an original reference design version.

That's a pity. I believe quite a few people are interested in the old design since the new 6950s don't unlock (correct me if I am wrong), and, obviously, a lot of people have the old 69x0 cards already.

You arenīt wrong bud, only the 1st generation of 6950 2gb (reference cards) with "old" PCB design can unlock to a 6970 2gb.

Itīs a shame, I suppose that the only thing to do is to pick some normal aluminium heatsinks....

    6970 is a Different product:

In fact, the HD6970-HS has actually just been released.

It is compatible with AMD's most recent PCB revision (not the launch version), so it still has a short compatibility list. But this is expected to expand rapidly as reseller inventories of the early PCB deplete and are gradually replaced by the newer PCB.

    Current compatibility list includes:

    • HIS IceQ Turbo H697QT2G2M Radeon HD 6970 2GB (subject to confirmation)
    • PowerColor PCS+ AX6970 2GBD5-PP2DHG Radeon HD 6970 Call of Duty Edition 2GB
    • SAPPHIRE 100311-2SR Radeon HD 6970 2GB
    • PowerColor PCS+ Vortex II Edition (COD Edition) AX6950 2GBD5-PPVG Radeon HD 6950 2GB

I kow I know, some of you will say that it leaves all the early adpoters of 6970's out in the cold; but my rationale when I made the design choice was quite simple: early adopters tend to use full cover blocks anyways.. Since the new PCB 's will bring reduced costs for the 6970's, and my primary customers for these heatsinks are those who are more price-sensitive, the decision made sense at the time.

Now, that was theory.. let's see what happens in practice. If inventories of early 6970's don't drop rapidly, it would mean that even the reduced quantities produced by AMD for the initial launch are satisfying the demand (should we say a flop in terms of product success?), and newer cost-reduced PCB's will be slower to show up. This might also push more Brands to go to non-reference designs to drop costs even further. In which case the HD6970-HS is doomed. It's quite hard to predict in fact. Time will tell I guess.

    Thanks for the explanation gabe.
How big are the differences between the original 6970 pcb and the new ones?
I really hoped for some decent sinks for the vrms on my card... :-(

    Hi Gabe,

I have the XFX HD-695A-CNFC 2gb video card, but on your post above and the swiftech website it states

    XFX HD-695X-CNFC

    Is this a typo?

    Thanks

    Sorry for the bump.

Gabe or anyone else can you confirm if either of these will work with this card, and which one?

    HIS IceQ X Turbo H695QNT2G2M Radeon HD 6950 2GB

You list the 1gb version. I just need confirmation that it will work with 2gb card also.

Also will these hit the other stores soon or only sold by swiftech?

Performance PCs has them last I checked.

Does anyone know if any other cards are starting to use the newer board design yet or is it still limited to the 3 cards mentioned previously?
