In that case let's reserve judgement until we see a few games based on this engine. When that happens, I reserve the right to link back to this thread and say "now where did THOSE graphics go?"

Need I remind you of the GDC 2009 CryEngine 3 demo screenshots.

In a couple generations, though, you should be able to have to power of 3x580s on one card. And it will probably take about that long to develop a game based on that engine.
IIRC when Epic whipped out the Unreal three demo it was running off dual 6800's.

Whoever when Unreal Tournament 3 came out, one of the biggest reasons it failed hard was that the system requirements were too steep. And by the time people had hardware to run it, other games were out.

Epic deserved to have it's number one franchise destroyed by releasing a game most people couldn't run properly.

They are console centric now anyways, but I don't have faith in them to release a playble game anymore.

meah batttlefield 3 looks good but from what ive seen so far its not ground breaking or anything amazing... in fact it looks like alot of trailers now a days. they can even make console ports look sweet in trailers.

the new unreal engine looks amazing and IMO better than the new frostbite 2.0 engine from what ive seen so far...

i dunno man UT3 ran like butter on almost anything. I was able to max it on my 1950xtx when it came out without issue so i dunno what type of system you had that could not run it dialed down....

I really doubt we would ever see a game that looks this good tho within 3 years....

It ran fine for me, but I remember people that had troubles, even with G80's.

THey lasted long enough and the game died and epic was mocked as they should have been for that disaster.

If you make a game that doesn't run on average set ups, then don't complain if it does poorly.

I'm not hating at all here. The two points above have happened time and again after seeing "tech demos".
    It was real time.

Pre-rendered stuff wouldn't be so sloppy about lightining. It wouldn't be even possible, actually.

I ran the vanilla version with a 6600GT and an old K8 dual core CPU with no issues at all at 1024x768.
It must have been a case of driver hell if some got issues whereas others didn't (Specific mix of platform and/or its drivers with GPUs and/or its drivers, for example).

I had a 1950pro and it was struggling w/ GoW.I believe HD4850/GTX260 is min gpu for UE3@ Hi res(1080p).If you want 1600p you need HD6870/GTX560.

It really depends in the UE3 game. as I said before my 1950XTX ran UT3 just fine maxed out. however newer UE3 games like MOH and Bulletstorm require allot more performance as they have made allot of changes to the engine. this latest demo just goes to show that the engine is still very robust.

If Battlefield 3 graphics can look as good as they do, even with the consoles holding back what Frostbite 2 engine really could have been. Considering all that i don't think this is that out of reach, or that impressive.
But what do i know, i thought some stills of BF3 looked real, if i had shown my mom those stills she couldn't tell the difference, in these she could, but that is probably the setting/choice of colours.
