Already? Ram is like the slowest updated component in PCs these days.

I think this is mainly gonna be for server applications.

nah RAM is the slowest, PSUs , back 5 years ago a 500 watt PSU was like the king lol. Then we saw 1kw+ units from PC&P, and now 1kw units are typical, and now we have higher efficiency. Ram was ddr2 now its been DDR3 wayy to long i think, we have dual, now triple, and even quad channel coming up! I hope i don't need a new system.

the only problem with triple is that the latency on the controller is to high so it gives no benefit over the dual channel parts

No they arent, there have been several generations of PSUs released over just one generation of ram type.

yes but there are several generations of ddr3 ram.
we started with 1 GB sticks, then 2 GB sticks, and we are now at 4 GB sticks

in the 2 years ive had my current system ive upgraded my case once, power supply once, and memory twice

    started with 1 gb ddr3 1066
    then 2x 1GB DDR3 1800
    now 2x2 GB DDR3 1600

I will keep my current PSU till it dies, or i need a bigger one which i don't see happening for a while since its a corsair tx750

    There where a couple 650w+ (silverstone had a 680w) :P

edit: fun fact of the day, Silverstone still has the largest non-server PSU today.

What is this, 1kw is nothing! You need atleast a nuclear power plant to properly run your computer - "Like a King". Also, 1 or 2 % power efficiency updates are not that much compared to ram-MHz updates at the same time period.

what can we expect from ddr4?
can the apps really benefit from it? i recall only a few handful apps which are really ram-hungry.
is it a good time to launch this?

Not a lot as apps won't benefit. Very very hard to find a program that is limited by bandwidth in the array desktop programs.

Kind of stuck at the moment hardware has far suppased software, so everything seems so minute. Sucks really.

well MAYBE thats cause it has barely any impact on performance
the performance difference between ddr2 and ddr3 is minimal on both 775 and am3

I've been through like 3 in 4 years LOL
Mainly because another computer in the house has one die and the parents are screaming "WE NEED OUR COMPUTER FIXED!!!! we never use the DVD drive anyway, but we want it fixed in case we need it."

mine migrates to them and i get a new one.

graphics memory skipped GDDR4 and went straight to GDDR5.
    Why is RAM not following?

    Gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6
    Core 2 Quad Q9450 @ 3.4Ghz (Zalman CNPS9700 LED)
    Corsair Twin2X4096-6400C4DHX @ DDR2-1066

That's good news. There's always a Chicken | Egg issue with memory standards... if CPU's implement it before manufacturer's the CPU's are useless and vice-versa, I'm glad to see someone broke the stalemate.

Adding DDR4 support to a CPU should be a comparatively trivial thing to do, so hopefully we start to see some announcements around roadmap items featuring DDR4 sooner than we might have otherwise.

As to the "why"? It's true we don't need the speed or bandwidth in the consumer sector at the moment, but DDR4 will be less expensive to manufacture than DDR3, and that's more than enough reason for me.
Dual CCIE (Route\Switch and Security) at your disposal. Have a Cisco-related or other network question? My PM box is always open.
