Because most CCD sensors can't produce clean images above ISO400. Most are even grainy at ISO400. They just aren't practical especially now that CMOS sensors are capable of producing better colors (at the standard retail market level anyway). Plus there wasn't anywhere to go with them. The limits of the sensor had pretty much been reached; at an affordable rate anyway.

You don't have to say goodbye though. There are plenty of CCD based gems to be had. One reason I'll never give up my D50. I love that body for things like product photography.
