Yeah I'm screwed then. 2 - 3L of Coca cola per day every day for the last... heck I can't even remember, it's been so long.

    Nice knowing you guys.

Hm. Good thing I don't drink a lot of it. Although I have some every so often, which is probably still no good.

Probably a good thing that I don't drink soda much, then. I never liked the stuff--always too fizzy and I don't like tasting my burps.

A few months ago, I cut out sodas and caffeine out of my diet. I'm dropping weight without even working out...go figure.

A friend of mine did the same thing and lost a lot of weight without working out or doing any kind of sports. I was shocked when I saw him for the first time after about 3 months. But his case was probably more extreme since he was probably pushing 250lbs+ before he cut the soda.

That is the first thing I tell people when they ask me how to lose weight. Cutting soda out of your diet alone will help most people lose a few pounds.

I have not had a pop since I was a small small child.

I really do not drink much soda anymore. I usually grab a Dr. Pepper if I want a soda, but I prefer root beer like hipno650.

As someone who loves root beer, you are in luck! Not all root beers contain 'caramel color.' Some examples are Bulldog and root beer by the Olde Town Root Beer company. Both are really good root beers as well.

There's been quite a few studies out in 2011 that soda is very bad for you. First I read about 2 weeks ago that as little as 2 drinks per week containing high fructose corn syrup doubles your chances of pancreatic cancer. Then another study came out identifying that the artificial sweeteners in diet drinks are much worse for us than previously known. Now this? WOW. Soda might be coming off my drinking list soon. In California they're trying to pass laws banning some of these components and soda companies are freaking out.

Honestly, I've wondered if the coloring agents in colas are a carcinogen for the last 10-15 years. I often drink the clear sodas just to be safe.

No problem. Root beers are awesome! I just got to get my fiance into liking them. She says that Dr. Pepper tastes like root beer...lol. Dr. Pepper is my second favorite flavor. Honestly, I like Mnt. Dew, but it feels syrupy. Throwback was okay, but lacked the true Mnt. Dew flavor. I prefer a local flavor called Ski for an alternative to Mnt. Dew. It has more carbonation, a little less sweeter (it uses a mixture of sugar/hfcs), and a greater citrus flavor. If you are in the St. Louis area, look around for it. I also think they have it in Tennessee. They have a website too. http://www.myskisoda.com/index.html. Produced by Double-Cola I believe.

Eh, I am not sure I believe the study regarding HFCS and soda. Only because HFCS is pretty much in most processed foods since it is a dirt cheap alternative for sugar in the US. I believe it is bad for you (diabetes) and about 95% of the food/drink I consume does not contain it.

In general, for any food or drink, moderation is the key. Consuming a 12 pack of soda a day probably isn't the best thing in the world, mostly because of the unneeded calories (almost 1700 calories for a 12 pack of coke). Place that on top of daily meals, and you can easily break 4000 calories a day. So, if you want a soda go for it, once in a while won't kill you.

As pointed out in the linked article, the levels used in the study are much higher than the "dosage" found in sodas and other products. Moreover, the rate of metabolism and breakdown of 4-MEI will likely be very different than in mice. While the study may be worth following up, it doesn't automatically mean that drinking a soda is going to kill you in 5.45 years. For those prone to consume massive amounts it may be more of an issue. At the end of the day, balancing the foods one eats and erring on the side of unprocessed foods is a safe practice, though even "natural" foods can have harmful chemicals. Many things have the potential to be harmful, and it's the reason why so few medications, small molecules, therapies, etc. get approved by the FDA. If it's a product that has been consumed for over 100 years though and hasn't been banned by the FDA, you probably shouldn't lose sleep over it .
