    Question for AMD server

    Hi,

I know very little info on servers, but i wanna have one server with magny cours because I think is nice to prove one and I need to know whats is the real diference with the regular system desktop.

I know that there Memorys and HDD especial for server, but I don't know if this server system (Magny cours Socket G34) run with all the others components (hardware) like a desktops system...I mean; memory, VGA and HDD, etc. Do they run with the max of efficiency?

    Thanks

I run a Magny-Cours system, and everything (so far) is very similar to the desktop set-up. The only differences that you might experience are if you purchase a dual or quad socket motherboard. Then, you'll need the appropriate amount of fans and a case big enough to house it. After that, everything is the same. For RAM, you can buy unbuffered regular memory for use or the ECC server memory with the difference being a higher memory ceiling with the ECC. With server boards, you'll most likely only get 1 PCIe x16 slot, unless you get the one I have in my sig, the ASUS KGPE-D16, which has 2.

As for efficiency, my system is very efficient. I use mine for daily use and WCG and I'm averaging around 25000 to 35000 PPD.

Are there any more questions that you have?

    I hope this helps,

    Thanks Xanadu

If i use a motherboard with 2 or 4 socket I need to have 2 or 4 CPU?...or i can use only one CPU in a mobo with dual/ quad socket?

One use I wanna do is for rendering and Video processes...for the numbers of cores, Magny cours is good opcion for this?

You don't have to populate all sockets. You can get a dual and use one socket for instance.

    OK, thanks
what do you think of this configuration? is good?

    AMD Opteron 6128 Magny-Cours 2.0GHz 8 Cores x 2 ($275 x2)
    ASUS KGPE-D16 Dual Socket G34 ($409)
    G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 1066MHz16GB ($189)
    CORSAIR Professional Series AX1200 1200W ($279)
    GTX560 ($249)
Corsair Force 60GB For System ($129)
    WD Caviar Black 1TB x 2 in RAID ($89)
I see that CPU (Magny cours) is more large than the other CPU for AM3. Whats cooler i can use?

    Total system around 2000 dollars.

I wouldn't go with WD drives for raid. Have any other brand prefs for HDDs? Most others are fine. I've had great luck with hitachis and samsungs in raid.

I have used black drives in many Raid setups with out any issue. Primarily on AMD builds using onboard SATA. Most are raid 1. The Samsungs have been good also, but I haven't used to many of them.

I've only owned one consumer-grade Seagate drive that didn't crash and burn on me, and I've owned quite a lot of them. I stay away from anything that isn't enterprise class from that brand. If you've had good luck with them though, I've not heard of any issues with them in RAID.

No, no you cannot. It's impossible to OC Magny-Cours. As JF-AMD has stated time and time again, they're for servers.

Still, one can't help but to dream...

    I'm using that KGPE-D16 board with 2 6128s

Just make sure to buy registered DDR3.

Supermicro has a single socket boards if you need it.

You might want to look at 2cpu.com forum.

I wish there was a Overclokable motherboard (single or dual socket)

tHIS IS THE BOARD YOU WANT TO GET........http://forums.2cpu.com/showthread.php?t=97747

Just remember that with a Dual CPU set up you need equal amount of ram to populate each CPU Die minimum of 2 sticks of ram per CPU and yes you can get 1 CPU and add the other later on.

ASUS is not good solution for a server or workstation setup neither is TYAN I only use and recommend Super Micro Server and workstation boards Just built a Super Micro H8SGL-F-O with Opteron 6128 and 8 Gigs of Kingston ECC Dual Parity Server Ram, ARECA 1210 Raid Controller 2 250gb Hitachi Drives in Raid 0 2 Hitachi 1TB Drives running Raid 1 for his Storage array XFX RAEDON 5770 & Creative Sound Blaster PCI-E for a Customer last week and it screams. The only difference between that and the Link to the Dual G34 board I just provided is 2 CPU Socket of course and Better scalability with the PCI-E Lanes for things such as Running Raid Controllers @ X8 vs @ X4
    SuperMicro X8SAX
    Xeon 5620
    12GB - Crucial ECC DDR3 1333
    Intel 520 180GB Cherryville
    Areca 1231ML ~ 2~ 250GB Seagate ES.2 ~ Raid 0 ~ 4~ Hitachi 5K3000 2TB ~ Raid 6 ~
