Why would they make another CHIV for 890FX and then have a 990FX coming out also. Seems kind of backwards.

The link shows motherboards with future design ( M5Axxx ) based on 880G and 760G chipset. The scene looks like the 1GHz and 2.6GHz HT clock support back from Athlon64 to Phenom transition. Even today 1GHz HT boards based on old Nvidia chipset support all AMD processors including X6.
I don't see any wrong here. Compatibility is always welcome.
Maybe the maximum performance/ best power management of the new processors depends on the support of a new chipset. Yet previous users of 890GX/FX can use the new processors.
I don't think that Asus will release a new version of old boards since the close launch of 990 family.
Waiting for the release .....

I could swear there was a pin difference in sockets between the CHIV I've got recently and the first gen M4a89gtdpro-usb3 board i had. Lets hope its not just them 'special' grey sockets that support am3+ only.

My Crosshair IV Formula can take a Bulldozer... ? That's pretty pleasing... but puzzling too, I was sure it wasn't possible.

the sockets are keyed different (top left) so we need to see a cpu and if it has a key of 3 no pin on the bottom left (top left when u put it in) then it will work, if not then it wont.
and amd i think is using an in chip IGP with am3+ and the BD so some may and some may not work

I am not sure updating to the latest BIOS for the C4F is a good idea. The changelog says:
"For testing AM3+ CPU Function only, do no update this BIOS while using AM3 or previous type CPUs!"
and its got a new function which seems to link in with new power gating stuff mentioned for bulldozer? Don't know hmm

That would be awesome if I did have one of those "special sockets on either of my 890 boards but I doubt it. I'll look at mine later on tomorrow.

It's not true.
The ASUS M2N32 boards support up to Phenom II 940 fine, 955-975 with a workaround.
There is a modded bios out for the EVGA/XFX/Foxconn board by bios-mods.com to support up to X6, though I don't think anyone has tried it yet. (I'm gonna try it with my 565 when I get time)

Trading some power management features for not having to buy another board - why not. Sounds fair.

hm, I dont know, Im for maximal performance and better power management , others I dont care. Its totaly new CPU, not old K10 :-( (K10 coming from K8!)

Remember, Phenom II isn't using all the 941 pins the AM3 socket has, the extra pin might be for future product or for high end Zambezi. I guess we will know soon enough.
