Question Computer shut off during power on...won't turn on anymore.

So a little over a week ago I turned n my computer and about 8 seconds into it powering on it shuts off. I did not have my monitor on so I couldn't see if it was going through the normal process or if something happened. I just hit the pwr button and turned away. So after it shut down I tried to power it back on and nothing happened. So I hit the hard power switch on my PSU and tried again. All the lights on the fans turn on and the fans twitch for a split second and then nothing happens. If I hit the power button again nothing at all happens.

The blue status light on the MoBo stays on as long as the PSU hard switch is on, and when I try powering on the computer after a hard reset the yellow power status light comes on as well, but the computer does not come on. The fans twitch and light up for a second but nothing else. Again the yellow power button comes on and stays on like the MoBo thinks the computer did come on completely. If I hold the power button long enough the yellow power light on the MoBo goes off and if I try to power cycle again it repeats the process (fans light up/twitch and yellow power light on MoBo turns on. If I hit th pwr button again nothing at all happens unless I hard reset PSU)

It's either a PSU or MoBo problem, right? Any ideas?

The computer is the one in my sig. Except it's not OC to 4ghz anymore. I had the dummy OC on @ 3.3ghz.

    Thanks

    Frank

Assuming you're running sli.. I would try removing one of the 250s or replace one of the 6pin pcie power connectors with a molex to 6pin adapter.

Do you have a spare PSU? If so please try to use that, as it sounds like your board is not getting enought power.

If i were you, I'll take out the motherboard and place it on the side of your case with paper or cardboard underneath it so the MB is not actually touching the case. Disconnecting everything, only leaving the cpu/heatsink, RAM, video card, and the connectors to your case's power switch button. Try powering it this way.

Newegg might depending on how long ago you got it. But Corsair would for sure if it is bad. 5 year warranty on that model I do believe.

Well got a brand new PSU from Corsair (7 year full coverage FTW) but the damn computer still does the same sh it!

Then it must be the MoBo? So damn pissed right now.

I was wondering, if the little watch battery on the MoBo is dead would that prevent it from turning on?

So my computer just blew up...yeah...

Ok so basically after unplugging my SSD and video card, the status lights on the MoBo started acting differently in response to the pressing the power button. So i started pumping the power button (probably a bad idea in hind sight) and magically the CPU cooler fan and lights came on and then...AND THEN!! The capacitors on the left side of the CPU freaking caught on fire! Tons of smoke went up into the air and i shut off the PSU's power. WOW haha im seriously entertained right now not even pissed. I'm pretty sure it was a Mobo problem now to begin with lol.

Everything else seems fine. I had my SSD and video card unplugged. My RAM was still in but im sure it's fine.

So i tried unplugging the PSU CPU power cable from the MoBo and tried powering on. Now the CPU coolers fan and lights came on and stayed on. But obviously at this point nothing else is connected and the MoBo is most likely fried. (status lights come on the MoBo still and the debug LED shows "FF" which means booting. So idk...)

Just for the hell of it, I plugged the PSU CPU power cable back in and powered on...the same capacitors behind the top left heat sink caught fire until I turned the power off haha.

So how do i know if the new PSU is bad or if it was the MoBo? Because I don't want to buy a new MoBo and have this new PSU from Corsair do the same thing to the new MoBo.

Even if late, here is my experience, it could help.

Three months ago I "cleaned" my case from dust and so on, when I plugged everything back I noticed that after switching on the PSU, the keyboard lights (num lock, caps lock, scroll on) kept blinking. As funny as it may sound, unplugging the headset(USB) and putting it back on saw the keyboard lights stop from blinking. I switched on the machine and it booted.

Months later, I was abroad, came back after five days, switched on the PC and nothing: fans, CPU fan, DVD ROM and DVD Writer work but the system does not boot, I just see the HDD Led blink red for 10 seconds, then goes off and the system does not boot.

I replaced the 400W PSU with a 700W one and the system boots. After two weeks, same problem, the one described above. To make a long story short, I knew it wasn't the PSU so I moved on to RAM. I gave it an over-night MemTEST86 and no problems were detected. Out of curiosity, I tried Western Digital's System Diagnostics tool against my hard drives. The data drive passed the Quick Smart TEST, the OS Drive, C:, ouch ouch did not.

Two weeks ago I removed the drive, formatted, re-installed everything and since then, touch wood, the system reboots and switches on without any issues.

To recap, replace your PSU, MemTEST your RAM and check your hard drives with the manufactures' tool. If it's a Samsung you need to do it from DOS.
