Problem with finding drivers for ethernet port (ECS motherboard)

I just had to do a reformat on a pre-built computer for someone. Of course, like everyone, they had lost the disc with all the drivers and utilities.

I thought "no problem, I'll just download them from the manufacturer's site"

So anyway, the problem I'm having is getting the ethernet port working.

Here is ECS's page with the motherboard drivers: http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWebSite_200...nuID=1&LanID=0

ECS's site say that the ethernet port requires the Realtek RTL81xxx driver, but after installing this, still no internet connection..

After some reading, I found that this was not the correct driver, and that the port is actually controlled by the SIS 965L southbridge. So I downloaded the driver from SIS's site, but still no luck.

The ethernet port is enabled in device manager and in the BIOS.

I am really stumped here, does anyone have any ideas on what I could do?

I believe you are correct, the Realtek RTL8201CL is just the PHY and the SIS 965L provides the LAN. Was the SIS driver you tried the sl119.zip package? You might try going through device manager and install the driver that way, pointing to the inf file.

    Yes, that's the one.

Could you point me to where the inf file is located? I'm having trouble finding it.

After you extract the zip file, there is a folder named WinXP2K (I am assuming your OS is Windows XP). Inside that folder are the driver files. The inf is named NETOEM.inf. I hope that works for you.

Right, yep. I have tried that, and it cannot install the driver, I get a code 10 error:

    "the device cannot start"

This is extremely frustrating. I feel like I have been through every possible solution yet nothing works.

Hmm I guess I was wrong then. You said that you tried the Realtek driver too, was it the 5.719 available on this page?

Yes, I have tried two versions of the driver.

And I do really appreciate your help BTW.

Glad to try to help. I love a good mystery. And this sure is. A cheap NIC card might be the best solution. At least you could get to windows update and see if it finds a driver. One other thing, what service pack of XP is this? SP3?

    Yep, I've just ordered one.

I will check the service pack tomorrow, I turned it off a couple of hours ago. Probably for the best, I wasn't far away from taking a sledgehammer to it.

haha, I took a hammer to a cheap junk broadcomm wifi USB chip after wiring my house with GiGe a few months back.

Silly crud overheated under normal websurfing use, and disconnected frequently.

Cannot say I felt better afterwards, but it was 25usd spent, and much more frustration afterwards. Only good thing that came out of it was motivating me to start stringing cat6 cables around the house...
I own everything, so can it!

    EDIT: well, not anymore
