XS PrimeGrid team (CUDA and ATi supported!)

Trying this out and I get major lag on the two computers I use this on. Is this normal? I'm not sure if it's just graphical lag but I feel like I'm watching a slideshow when using the computer. I've done some Google'n and some dude was saying something about it being super efficient at using the gpu but I don't think that's the case. F@H uses my gpu at around the same amount (98-99% or so) and it even makes my gpu 10-15C hotter and no graphical lag when running that (except in FF4 if hardware acc. is on). I'm assuming both projects could use different parts of the gpu and that could explain it.

Anyway, just figured I'd chime in.

Welcome Movieman! Yes, certain GPUs have lag. My machine with a single 460 has it sometimes. I do believe ATI cards have it more often than nVidia. Anyway, glad you could join us.

And on another note, we jumped two spots to 28th yesterday, surpassing SetiKah@Korea and (finally) Team Anandtech (a rival?). Great work gents, keep it up!

Anyone using the new Nvidia 270.51 driver on this? Wondering if I'm the only one getting driver crashes when pausing this project.

And.. geez the gpu lag with this running is horrid. I wonder if it's my card or my Win7 install is getting old.

Edit: It also turns any youtube video I'm watching green if I pause it while the video is loaded/loading/playing/etc.

Yeah you basically can't crunch PrimeGrid while using the computer. What I do with one of my cruncher is when the computer is being used, I will suspend PrimeGrid and crunch GPUGrid. When I am away, I simply turn PrimeGrid back on.

My daily use machine has a 460 and though there is always some lag, it's not so bad that it's unusable, and if I need to view video or something more GPU intensive I just pause BOINC temporarily. Have you guys tried editing the usage throttling setting in BOINC?

As I am only partially happy with my current mobo/cpu combo (P55 FTW/i7 875k), it's awfully tempting to step up to a Sandy Bridge chip.... but I've decided that I'm not upgrading this machine any more till the socket 1356/2011 stuff comes to market later this year. If I try to rationalize buying/upgrading something before that... please scold me.

Allrighty, it was 81 degrees in Pittsburgh today, and though I didn't turn on the A/C, at some point soon I will be. There's no way I can afford to cool my house and continue to crank out these numbers. (My e-bill would be appr. $300/mo if I did). On the bright side, I have another Hawk 460 on the way. Ups and downs, you know, like a carousel, around and around, feelin' the flow, workin' it.

Try to run some other kind of projects with your high output cards like the 580. GPUGRID will be a nice option with its ~60% utilization.

Meanwhile, just run all your 460 cards as they are not as power hungry.
By the way, Los Angeles will heat up to the 80s in a few days too.

Glad you enjoyed them. I'm still using my chiller setup. I went down from 5 rigs to 2 rigs last yr, but it all still works well. Unless someone is in it for the project/experiment/tinkering aspects--I really suggest just going with a chiller and large res setup. It really is the overall best way to go, imo.
