this doesn't feel like a "tock" upgrade though. not compared to 775 -> i7 anyway. Maybe I'm just expecting too much these days. I'll be waiting for the 8 core chips to come out before I upgrade my 775, I think.

Intel release new chips on a "tick - tock" time frame. What that means is that they have a "tock" where the architecture is completely rebuilt (like from netburst to core2, core2 to i7 and i7 to SB) and a "tick" where it's "tweaked" like when the 45nm i7s were scaled to the 32nm process. I think it was the Intel CEO who coined the term.

Impressive. That's almost exactly what my undervolted i3 @ 3.7 is pulling.
And it's running an ssd with NO video card on a GB-ud2h H55 matx board.

I think I'll have to make a San Jose Microcenter run on the 9th

I read a while back that the matx H67 boards don't allow overclocking.
    Is that true?

Really don't want to buy (and power) a video card for a deadheaded cruncher.
Plus, if H67 won't OC then I could save a few bucks by buying a non-K 2600 chip.
    Currently messing with:
    Intel DP55SB Sharpsberg
    i7-860 (stock) under a Zalman CNPS-8700NT cooler
    4x4GB Corsair Vengence @ 1600
XFX Radeon 5850 Black Edition (765, 1125 stock)
Mushkin Chronos DX 240GB and 1.5 TB WD Black
Powered by a Seasonic X-650 and stuffed into a Silverstone GD05 case

Nah i believe that was only with a non "K" chip, the intel H series do overclock any chip but the unlocked chips obviously OC alot higher because you have the multi to play with not just the blck..

Another thing I find funny is AMD/Intel would snipe any of our Moms on a grocery run if it meant good quarterly results, and you are forever whining about what feser did?

No, the H series do not overclock. Only P67 will allow for overclocking.

I believe H67 won't be able to overclock the cpu.

Pretty silly to have an IGP but not be able to use it imo (on a P67 chipset)

So on Monday, maybe even Sunday, I will have a SB system up & running.

    GA-P67A-UD4
    2600k
    G.SKILL F3-12800CL9D-8GBRL
to go along with my trusty 5870 & my water system.

Wish me luck! I am so excited....it has been a long time since I have had an upgrade! Hoping to pull some monster benches & crunch like a mofo.

Drinking coffee and trying to get caught up SB which I haven't been following much.
So far I can't say I like what I'm seeing.
Please straighten me out if the following is incorrect.

    We have 2 chipsets:
H67-allows use of IGP, no multiplier overclocking.
    P67-no IGP, allows multiplier overclocking.

We have 2 chips: (there are more of course but I'm assuming we all want max cores here)
    2600-HD 2000 IGP, multiplier locked.
    2600K-HD 3000 IGP, multiplier unlocked.

So if I want the ability to OC via multiplier, I need 2600K + P67 which forces me to pay Intel not only for an IGP I can't use at all, but for the UPGRADED IGP that I can't use at all.
If I want the higher performance IGP, I need 2600K + H67 which forces me to pay Intel for an unlocked multiplier CPU which I can't use at all.

Further, according to Intel, the 2600K does not support virtualization while the 2600 does.
This isn't a factor for me but I imagine it will be for some.

Unless I'm reading wrong (which I'm hoping is the case) then it strikes me that the upper-level Intel management folks have screwed the pooch pretty badly here.

In my version of reality the HD 3000 IGP should be in the 2600 chip for use with H67 and the HD 2000 IGP should be in the 2600K chip (actually the IGP should be removed entirely and replaced with cores ala Clarkdale/Lynnfield) for P67.
    Or we're missing a chipset.

Again, please correct me if I'm wrong.
As it stands, I'll be sitting this one out until I get a better handle on what's going on here.

I'm not so sure it is... at least not to the 4/4's (for all reasons other than crunching). Now when I see some of those 8/8's out, you can be sure I'll be upgrading

I'm going to upgrade to an SSD in the next month and I think that will give me the biggest upgrade "feel" out of anything that I could change. Past that, if I'm going to upgrade I want a significant higher amount of cores for crunching. otherwise, i would have gone the i7 route a year ago

thanks for the link, z68 looks like the one to have for us crunchers. of course if the 2600K/P67 is going to be your main rig then it's a moot point because you're more than likely going to have a discrete card anyway.

if you've skipped i7 and are now skipping early SB, then i expect you to have the first dual socket SB platform when available!!

Well for a $550.00 upgrade I cant go wrong brother. Been on 4 cores for way too long. Also...the electrical savings from my current rig will be nice to see. Then when the new socket comes out in 3rd quarter, I might see another upgrade. I'll just have to wait & see.
