    i7, board, and memory

I've searched, maybe I'm just blind, but I can't find what I need

I've got my i7-950 here begging for a board and memory. So I'm ordering soon-ish. Aiming for around 4GHz or so probably if I can figure it out lol.

I have a couple Amazon gift cards so I'll probably get the board from there. Looking at the Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R - that's the recommended one here, right? Or was it a different one?

Then for memory, I figure a 3GB kit is all I'd need for a cruncher. To reach the CPU speed I want, should I go with DDR3-1600 is DDR3-1333 fine? Not a big price difference between the two but if there isn't a real difference then I'd rather save the couple bucks

    my new i7 rig is an ex58-ud3r and dominator 3 x 1gB 1600 and a 950.

My 950 wants too much volatge to run 4gHz so I'm at about 3.9 and 1.33v

UD3R rev 2.0 all the way, sparky !

3x1 GB is enough really, but with todays RAM prices , get a 6GB kit.
Any DDR3 1600 will do fine . I'd look out for RAM with 7-8-7 timings because these most likely have PSC IC's ... but as I said any DDR3 1600 within your budget is fine.

I have always been an Asus man but after the last two Gigabyte boards that I have used I have been very impressed and think they offer more bang for the buck. The UD3R should be a great board for your 950. With the proper cooling 4ghz should be obtainable if the chip is willing, but as we all know, not all chips are the same when it comes to overclocking.

The i7 920 that I got from LU523 and Dave does 4ghz @ 1.248v actual. It does require some good watercooling to keep it in the low to mid fifties though.

Go with the Asus, always been my favorite! Just tried a couple GB boards because as a lot of people here have said how great they are, and they aren't as bad as they used to be, but...

Have a Sabertooth running a 950 running at 4000 MHz @ 1.24v. Northbridge is cool, and you get the latest Sata and USB hardware, all for a good price.

And another BIG thing these days, Gigabyte does not cross ship!! so if you have problems with a GB board like I am you'll have to spent countless time emailing/phone and then wait. As with Asus just ask for an Express RMA give them your CC# and they will have a new board in your hands in less than a week!!!

Latest sata and usb matters not to me since this thing is just gonna crunch with an old 80GB sata drive

I've had both Asus and Gigabyte boards and liked them both So, it doesn't matter much to me brand wise... which is cheaper? *edit* Amazon doesn't carry the sabertooth.

Cross-shipping, well, never done that since I don't want to deal with the possible hassle of them forgetting to credit my card back. I've heard of that happening every so often. I've always just shipped the dead one back and waited for the new one to arrive.

+1 on the UD3R. Mine has been running just about nonstop since I got it. It is easy to OC. That and I can't lie, mine was free. Still it is a good mobo. If I had to buy another today I would get another UD3R.

For just hooking to the internet to upload and download work units, a single NIC is fine
