    question about spanned volumes.

    Hello.

I have a quick question to bounce of you guy's.

i have build a storage server for use at home to backup all the pc's in the house.
I build so i could add disk's as my needs grow mainly when i upgrade the storage volume on my main rig from 1Tb disk's >2Tb > 3Tb or 4Tb disks
The old ones go to the server..
Raid card in the server is a arc-1680-24
But i want all those different size disk to be one gaint volume for the os.
I tried to combine two raid and/or volume sets in the raid controller setup but that doesn't work.
So i could alway's create the volumes on the controller and then use the os to span both of them so you get on gaint volume.

But does this distribute data equally over all the disk or just fills up one volume and then moves over to the other volume?

I want to do this to keep performance reasonable and not let it drop off at the end of the array's.

The server is also used to transcode and stream video and audio files to the various dnla devices arround the house
i currently use win server 2008r2 on the server but that was more of a test case so i am open to other OS choices

    Thx

u can do it in windows but u cannot do it with the boot volume. u dont want to put the os partition on spanned disks. and since it looks like u want to back up to it its a really bad idea to use old drives to do it
