TSMC gearing up for 28nm production in 2011 - Digitimes

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) has been adjusting its 28nm equipment to a manufacturing readiness maturity level of over 90%, and will start volume production using 28nm process as soon as possible in 2011, according to the company.

TSMC has made significant progress in upward adjusting the manufacturing readiness of 28nm equipment at its Fab 12 in the Hsinchu Science Park HSP), with the maturity level hiked from less than 50% in the fourth quarter of 2009 to more than 90% currently, the company indicated. The more advanced the manufacturing processes, the lower the initial manufacturing readiness of equipment and more efforts needed for adjustments, TSMC said, adding 90nm equipment, for example, has an initial maturity level of nearly 100% and almost does not need any adjustment, TSMC explained.

TSMC has many clients for its 28nm process, including Xilinx, Altera, Nvidia, AMD and Qualcomm, and has attained tape-out for 71 IC products. The 28nm production capacity will be fully utilized by the end of 2011, TSMC noted.

In addition to 28nm, TSMC has urged its suppliers of equipment and materials to speed up R&D for 20nm process.

As soon as possible, this means Q1? I do not know any products coming so soon... So the end of Q1 - Q2, perhaps?

    im looking forward to this
considering i plan on skipping 40nm, the sooner 28nm comes out the better. cant wait for caymen like perf for just 100W and maybe sub 200$

Let's just hope their 28nm roll out goes better than 40nm did for them.
As quoted by LowRun......"So, we are one week past AMD's worst case scenario for BD's availability but they don't feel like communicating about the delay, I suppose AMD must be removed from the reliable sources list for AMD's products launch dates"

From the voices in my head

They said Cayman was delayed 2 weeks and no one was sure why, report comes out TSMC is producing 28nm in 2011.
Voice's conclude that Dec. 13th is close enough to 2011 and 2 weeks is enough time to stamp out some 28nm gpu's and throw out that old 40nm crap.

    Conclusion:

    Cayman is 28nm

I, well "we" can speculate too you see

Altera to use TSMC low-power process for some 28nm FPGAs

Altera has announced that it will also utilize low-power process technology from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) for its low-cost and midrange 28nm FPGA chips in order to provide customers a broad selection.

The additional 28nm FPGA families will be announced in 2011, Altera said. The company announced in April 2010 that its high-end 28nm Stratix V FPGAs will be manufactured on TSMC's 28nm high-performance (28HP) process, with sample shipments slated to begin in the first quarter of 2011.

Q2 is probably the earliest given 6 months from tapeout. The jump from 40nm to 28nm is going to be huge though, we're going to see some nice performance improvements. If all goes well we'll see a 7770 or something like that before summer. On the other hand the pipe cleaner isn't necessarily a cheap card to manufacture if it has problems, like the 4770. That's why AMD never produced a lot of them. Let's just hope TSMC won't drop the ball on this one too.
